The Stratton VA Medical Center opened in 1951 and serves Veterans in 22 counties of upstate New York, Western Massachusetts, and Vermont. The Medical Center is part of VA Health Care Upstate New York and is located in Albany, the capital of New York State. The Medical Center provides primary care, wellness and preventive outpatient care, and comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary inpatient care in medicine, plus a full range of outpatient services. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission. As an acute medical-surgical hospital, the Center also serves as a regional head and neck cancer care referral center, having and active Otolaryngology Service, Radiation Therapy Center with stereotactic radiosurgery/IMRT capability, and Medical Oncology and Hematology Services. The Medical Center employs over 1500 employees; has approximately 350 volunteers, work without compensation (WOC) residents, interns, and students; and is a complexity level 1C facility with enhanced surgery and work programs. The hospital has multiple residency programs including dental, pharmacy, and medical doctors and incorporates health professional students from multiple area colleges, technical schools, and hospitals as well as Fellowships, Internships, and the Volunteer Program to facilitate care and provide continuum medical prospects for future staffing.

The Chief of Medicine is clinically responsible to the Chief of Staff. The incumbent works collaboratively with the Medical VA Care line Manager to develop and promote high quality clinical service, research and education programs. The incumbent must be board certified in Internal Medicine and will have a faculty appointment and participate in academic activities of the Albany Medical College. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • May function independently as a member of the Medical Staff with full clinical privileges
  • Assumes complete professional responsibility for clinical assessments, patient-care decisions and documentation;
  • Provides consultation, direction and coordination of care in all Medicine services, ensuring the clinical quality and efficiency of care delivery;
  • Supervises the inpatient and outpatient components of Internal Medicine, to include: ICU, Inpatient medicine wards, dialysis, cardiology and gastroenterology procedure suites;
  • Provides direct supervision of all Internal Medicine providers;
  • Ensures credentialing and privileging requirements are met by all medicine service providers, including requirements for Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE);
  • Promotes and assures coverage for telehealth practice and activities;
  • Assists in the design, development and implementation of clinical programs;
  • Complies with local and national performance standards;
  • Attends and participates in administrative and informational meetings for the Medicine Service, Medical VA Care line, Chief of Staff and Medical Center Director;
  • Adheres to policies and procedures established by Central Office (VACO), the network (VISN02) and local medical center;
  • Participates in clinical review process including tort claims, peer review, management reviews and administrative activities as directed by the Chief of Staff;
  • Participates in Research/Quality Improvement activities;
  • Participates in process improvement/quality assurance projects;
  • Serves as a member of the facility medical staff and on the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff (ECMS);
  • Qualifies for and maintains a faculty appointment at associate professor or full professor level at Albany Medical College;
  • Provides oversight for the education of medical students, residents and fellows rotating on the Medicine service;
  • Fosters a culture of transparency, communication, collegiality and patient centered interdisciplinary team work.

* Work Schedule:* Full-Time, Monday through Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM, On-call hours are required and # of hours and days and times of on-call hours will vary according to discipline.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:

  • Board Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine and/or one of the IM Subspecialties.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Evidence of Progressive leadership responsibility, including having led a large clinical program or service line.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to partner with academic affiliations and research programs.
  • Experience with regulatory agencies and quality oversight programs.
