Two years of experience in the construction or modification of objects made of wood, metal, rubber, plastic or other similar materials.
Training in the construction or modification of objects made of wood, metal, rubber, plastic or other similar materials will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.
Function of Work:
To construct and design adaptive or specialized equipment to meet the needs of handicapped persons.
Level of Work:
General from Adaptive Equipment Specialist 2.
Location of Work:
Department of Health and Hospitals; Extended Care Mental Retardation Facilities.
Differs from related classes by performance of specialized duties in constructing adaptive equipment for handicapped persons.
Differs from Adaptive Equipment Specialist 2 by lack of advanced journeyman and leadworker assignments.
Examples of Work
Performs form shaping work in a wide variety of materials involved with the construction and/or alteration of customized adaptive equipment for the physically handicapped client following doctor's recommendation and occupational therapist's specifications.
Contributes to maintaining proper level of stock supplies and equipment needs through ordering procedure.
Contributes to instruction, teaching, and supervision of work performance regarding safety and learning experiences of staff, other shop personnel, licensed occupational therapists, Occupational Therapy Aides (Technician), intern O.T. students, and visitors making site visits to construct postural support devices for wheelchair inserts and other adaptive equipment.
Contributes to documentation of patient services rendered.
Contributes to reduction of fire and safety/health hazards in shop work area and in construction of equipment.
Assists in fabricating customized body molds (wheelchair seat and back inserts).
Upholsters customized wheelchair inserts.
Fabricates customized metal hardware attachments for wheelchair inserts and therapeutic equipment.
Maintains and repairs adaptive equipment (wheelchair frames, wheelchair inserts, therapeutic equipment, prosthesis, upper and lower extremity splints/braces, protective helmets, etc.).
Contributes to proper storage and documentation of stored wheelchairs frames and extra supplies.
Contributes technical assistance in evaluation and design of customized adaptive equipment.
Supervises shop when shop supervisor is absent.
