The Physician in the Primary Care Service at The Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) is an independent care provider who is highly skilled in the management of a patient's primary care needs or subspecialty evaluation and treatment and will maintain proficiency with the latest medical treatments and procedures via continuing medical education (CME).

  • Good organizational skills which enable completion of work.
  • Assume leadership in a patient centered program.
  • Establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Practices, promotes and implements current safety policies and procedures.
  • Assess safety needs of patients and implements opportunities to improve environmental and operational safety.
  • Identifies Quality Improvement issues and participates in QI monitoring and in the evaluation of clinical practices.
  • Provides age-specific care for young adults (age 20-40 years), middle adult (age 40-65), older adult (age 65-74) and geriatric patients (over 75).

Work Schedule: No more than 5 days per week, not to exceed 40 hours per week. No more than 8 hours per day between the hours of 6am to 6 pm, weekends included.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs); Moderate carrying (15-44 lbs); Straight pulling (1 hour); Pulling hand over hand (1 hour); Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (4 hours); Standing (4 hours); Repeated bending (4 hours); Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of color; Hearing (aid permitted); Emotional/mental stability.

Basic Requirements*: *

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Deree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
