Tour of Duty: Day Shift, Monday - Friday
The Nurse Manager is directly responsible for the management of patient care in the 28-bed Inpatient Telemetry Unit. The Nurse Manager is responsible for organizing, directing, and evaluating the patient care delivery system within the inpatient setting. The Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for the 24/7 operations of their units, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with acceptable standards of care. In addition, the Unit Manager executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of patient care for adult and geriatric patients, in accordance with the Michigan Nurse Practice Act, Medical center, and VA standards of care. The Nurse Manager has continuing responsibility for all the following functions: (1) planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work; (2) assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates; (3) evaluating the performance of subordinates; (4) making recommendations for appointments, advancements, or reassignments of subordinates; (5) giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters; (6) hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors; (7) recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate; and (8) identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training (VA Handbook 5007, Part III, Chapter 8). The Nurse Manager is also responsible for performance measures, performance improvement, customer service/patient satisfaction, patient and employee safety, interviewing applicants, employee relations, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards. The Nurse Manager actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. The Nurse Manager is responsible for staffing their units on a continual basis (24/7), validating the nursing hours per patient day, and working with other Nurse Managers to identify and share resources. The Nurse Manager is responsible for time scheduling of the unit, coaching staff, dealing with employee conduct and performance issues, completing and submitting recurring reports, proficiencies and performance evaluations in a timely manner. The Nurse Manager participates on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. The Nurse Manager identifies educational needs of staff and ensures that these needs are addressed. The Nurse Manager has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences, as well as orienting new Nurse Managers. The Nurse Manager works in partnership with the union and adheres to EEO principles. In the absence of a Nurse Manager, a cross-covering Nurse Manager will be designated to handle administrative and clinical issues, such as staffing coverage, granting leave, and patient and/or staff issues. The Nurse Manager will maintain competency/proficiency in practice on their assigned unit and remain current with required certification for their unit, i.e., basic life support (BLS) and/or advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). The Nurse Manager reports to the Associate Chief Nurse Inpatient and is accountable to the Associate Director for Patient Care Services (ADPCS).
Preferred Experience: 2-3 years of supervisory/management experience. 2-3 years of telemetry experience. Demonstrated expertise in organization dynamics, evaluative techniques and leadership abilities. Masters degree in nursing related with BSN from ACEN or CCNE accredited program preferred.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

Physical Requirements: This position requires Heavy Lifting, 45 pounds heavy carrying, 45 pounds straight pulling (4 hours); pushing (4 hours); use of fingers; both hands required; walking & standing 8-12 hours; repeated bending 8 hours; both legs required; ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable @ 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted). Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
