The Augusta Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center is a two-division Medical Center that provides tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, and spinal cord injury.   • The incumbent is a rotating, generalized pharmacy technician, who is directly involved in all aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drug orders and prescription items. The incumbent will fill unit-dose carts, performs final review of medication (prepared by another technician) to be dispensed to inpatient areas (unit dose carts). Perform record keeping for filing and cleaning schedule of unit-dose cassettes.

  • Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment such as: Talyst Autopack Packager, laminar air flow hoods, Scriptpro, and Pyxis.

  • Performs non-sterile compounds and uses standard protocols or judgment to determine an accurate expiration date for each batch prepared.

  • Prepares prescriptions for final check by pharmacist for immediate or mail-out processing; processes batch refill prescription ordering for mail-out processing and ultimate fulfillment of patient requests; dispenses completed medication orders directly to patients or their representatives

  • Prepares and fills Pyxis orders and requests for ward stock as required; operates Pyxis CII safe to dispense controlled substances to nursing units or procedural areas. Performs removal of out of date stock from Pyxis machines.

  • Performs sterile compounding by using proper aseptic technique and following USP Chapter 797 guidelines.

Candidates must meet all the requirements identified in the VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G28, Pharmacy Technician Qualification Standards

(1) Citizenship: U.S Citizenship is required (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

(2) Education and Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

(3) Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

(4) Physical Requirements. Applicant must meet the physical requirements established for this position.

(5) English Language Proficiency: Applicants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.


In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants at this grade level must demonstrate the following (KSAs) knowledge, skills, and abilities. If selected for the position KSAs need to be completed on plain paper, with a narrative description of experience, education and training as related to each skill.

  1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.

  2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.

  3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.

  4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
