HCA, Hospital Corporation of America Director of Perianesthesia in Austin, Texas

The Director of Peri-Anesthesia Services has full authority and responsibility for the administration and supervision of the Surgery Center, Pre-Surgical Testing, PACU and Endoscopy units in accordance with the mission and values of St. David’s Hospital.

Job Function

Oversees the operations of several units / departments in accordance with hospital and nursing department philosophy, policies, procedures, protocols and standards.

  • Develops and implements organizational plans so that communication is facilitated and functional responsibilities and lines of authority are maintained.

  • Promotes cooperation/collaboration with other departments, medical staff, auxiliary and community agencies to facilitate optimum patient care.

  • Analyzes problems and makes recommendations to the AVP of Surgery on current issues, services and programs as necessary.

  • Provides support to the AVP of Surgery as designated.

  • Develops and approves nursing policies for Surgical Services

  • Maintains current knowledge of Federal regulations and other regulatory bodies; i.e. JCAHO, OSHA and other standards as applicable to various areas.

  • Review and monitor physician, patient and employee satisfaction surveys. In collaboration with managers and supervisors, develops and implements action plans to address variances.

  • Attends pertinent section meetings

  • Makes self consistently available formally and informally to the medical staff.

    Develops and monitors department budgets

  • Participate in annual budget preparation

  • Approves payroll and review labor distribution on a monthly basis.

  • In collaboration with nurse managers, develops and implements strategies to control budgetary variances.

  • Assures reporting departments adhere to budget projections by reviewing daily operating reports.

  • Provides budget variance information to administration within a timely manner as requested.

    Assures the acquisition and retention of qualified staff

  • Adheres to personnel policies in the recruiting,, hiring, directing and counseling of staff.

  • Facilitates appropriate action through the effective use of decision making, communication and human development techniques.

  • Plans and participates in continuing education and development of employees.

  • Communicates with nursing supervisors, managers and AVP of Surgery regarding significant until or personnel problems.

    Develops a professional climate within the nursing units

  • Identifies learning needs of staff members and in collaboration with nursing educator, develops plan to meet educational needs.

  • Conducts management and unit meetings.

  • Oversees the development of unit process improvement plans and activities.

  • Serves on committees and task forces as is necessary to facilitate interdepartmental communication and operation

  • Maintains current policy, procedure, and regulatory manuals.

  • Attends two professional meetings, workshops or seminars annually.

  • Acts as liaison between administration and hospital departments, patients, families and visitors as well as other health care facilities.

  • Attends 85% of nursing management and DON meetings .


  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Health Care field

  • Preferred:Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration

  • Five (5) years management experience

  • Two (2) or more as Peri-Operative Supervisor or head nurse


  • Demonstrates effective working knowledge of equipment used in work area.

  • Demonstrates effective guest relations with internal and external customers.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Meditech and general computer skills.

  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patient information.

  • Participates in budget control by using only those supplies necessary within the work area.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of HCA’s and St. David’s “Patient First” safety initiatives through strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures.

  • Works autonomously, sets priorities and makes independent decisions of a complex nature.
  • Responsible for the 24 hour operations of the Peri-Anesthesia departments.

  • Responsible for all departmental budgets.

  • Utilizes all equipment used in supervised areas.

  • Makes decisions of significant difficulty.\

  • Knowledge of Peri-Anesthesia nursing principles and techniques based on the Association of Peri-Anesthesia Nursing’s Standards, Recommended Practices, and Guidelines.


  • Licensed by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners

  • ACLS / BLS

    Preferred: CPAN or CAPA certified
