_Unit Description:_ The Intermediate Care Unit is an 18-bed unit that cares for patients who are no longer critically ill but not ready to be placed in a medical/surgical or telemetry unit.

This team-oriented unit provides care to a diverse cardiac population (i.e., congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, respiratory compromise and dysrhythmias), as well as patients with multisystem compromise, renal and chronic illnesses. The unit also cares for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization (including post-interventional care) and open-heart surgery. Patients in these units may be on drips including Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, Dopamine, Dobutamine and Insulin. Ventilators and arterial lines/sheaths are also admitted to this unit.

Laptop stations, located at the bedside, allow real-time electronic medication administration (e-MAR) and documentation. This department's ancillary staff includes Patient Care Techs, a Unit Secretary and a dedicated Monitor Tech to monitor and interpret patients' cardiac rhythms at all times.

*Position Description:* The position is under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager and the Supervisor of the Nursing Unit. According to hospital policies and procedures, the Staff Nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for assigned patients.

_Licenses/Certifications:_ Required: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Texas. Current certification from the American Heart Association as a BLS provider. Preferred: Certification in area of specialty.
*Education/Experience:* Required: Graduation from an NLN school of professional nursing. At least 2 years of RN experience in an acute care setting Preferred:Completion of or actively pursuing a BSN degree. Experience as a Staff Nurse in an acute care setting.
