CloudFlare Senior Internal Tools Engineer in Austin, Texas
Senior Internal Tools Engineer
At CloudFlare, we have our eyes set on an ambitious goal -- to build a better, more secure internet. We believe that with our talented team, smart technology and engaged users we can solve some of the biggest problems on the web. We already serve more web traffic than Twitter, Bing, Wikipedia, Amazon, Apple and Instagram combined. Anytime we push a line of code, it affects over 200 million web surfers overnight. We are still a small team, well-funded, growing quickly and focused on building a world-class company.
About the Role
The Senior Internal Tools engineer gets the rare opportunity to engage across every major development team at CloudFlare including distributed networking, security engineering, platform and data infrastructure, and website and applications. As part of the Internal Tools team, you work firstly with customer-facing teams to pinpoint inefficiencies in our organization’s processes and design solutions.
Whether it’s closing gaps in our event-logging, creating debugging tools, or road mapping the future of our internal tools ecosystem, the Senior Tools engineer is critical to CloudFlare’s ability to scale our people organization to match the reach of our products.
In a typical week, the Internal Tools engineer might:
• Turn a manual CLI tool into an automated cloud service on our internal compute architecture • Design and implement the next generation of our internal APIs • Make pull requests against current services to bring them into line with new standards • Drive discussion on the pros and cons of our current architecture • Write automations for repetitive support tasks • Collaborate with peers to write, review, and provide feedback on a technical specification • Provide technical oversight and mentorship to more junior team members • Partner with Product to provide timelines and cost/benefit analysis to inform the roadmap for Internal Tools and the company overall
Therefore, as a Senior Tools Engineer it is critical that:
• You have succeed in previous team leadership roles, including accountability for the design of systems and shipping of projects. • You know how the web works. You know HTTP and TCP/IP and what a good API looks like. • You are a strong communicator. Explaining complex technical concepts to designers, support, and other engineers is no problem for you. • You are familiar with the process of moving applications to a service-oriented architecture. • You can break down complex requirements into steps. • You can point to examples of production level code you have architected, written or maintained. • You can jump into situations with few guardrails and make things better. • You are interested in building products driven by business processes. • You’re good at seeking advice in order to make the best decision. • You are someone that others enjoy working with due to your technical competence and positive attitude.
It would be awesome, but not essential, if you could also bring:
• Experience with large-scale PHP applications. • When things break -- and they will -- the eagerness and ability to help fix things. • Prior experience with or knowledge of large scale, high volume distributed systems • Experience in high growth start-up environments • Awareness that the internet is a scary place, so you understand security concepts deeply and can put them into action to protect us and our customers.
We offer competitive salaries, equity, fantastic health benefits plan, a new laptop, monthly CalTrain / BART pass for commuters and the opportunity to work with a smart, motivated team where you will see your contribution daily. A chance to travel the world, speaking at the best of the best security conferences. Our sunny offices are based in SOMA in San Francisco, CA.
Most importantly, a chance to be part of a highly motivated extremely fast paced team at the front-lines of InfoSec.
