The Technical Sales Representative (TSR) is expected to perform his/her responsibilities in generating sales, market share and profitability results for the assigned territory, with appropriate direction. Accomplishment of sales objectives, and the attainment of territory/regional/business unit performance objectives, are the key measurements for this position. Development of market, customer, and industry knowledge along with further development of technical product knowledge is imperative. Effective utilization and management of internal and external resources is expected. Perform customer/consumer training meetings and support conventions and professional association business building opportunities.

Major responsibilities:

Relationship Management

  • Develop relationships with targeted key influencers to promote awareness of Merial products and services and outline clinical benefits for product recommendation

  • Develop and manage relationships with applicable centers/clinics and their health care professionals to ensure support and recommendation of Merial brands through education and ongoing service support

  • Manage, develop and update the contacts

  • Communicate with Regional Manager to ensure adequate feedback from the marketplace

Sales and Customer Management

  • Assist in achieving overall territory sales target as a contribution to the region

  • Achieve individual call objectives to Veterinarians/Retailers/Producers and support staff.

  • Ensure optimal product placement at targeted veterinary clinics for all current and new product launches and detail staff accordingly to ensure product recommendation

  • Ongoing territory management and administration, including but not limited to:

  • Conduct thorough territory analysis on customer base and track progress towards your goals

  • Make contact with these key decision makers through face-to-face selling

  • Manage day-to-day requirements as they relate to the promotion, positioning and selling of Merial products

  • Maintain detailed account information including client contact and product preferences

  • Maintain a proactive plan to retain and increase sales through effective management of territory business

  • Report activities and other business updates during the monthly regional sales meetings

  • Attend trade shows/conferences as needed

  • Perform special projects as required


  • Prepare weekly/monthly reports on activities

  • Report on key metrics as required, eg. sales successes/challenges

  • Maintain key contact lists of Veterinarians, AHT’s and other relevant healthcare providers

  • Submit timely and accurate expense reports

Product and Market Knowledge

  • Develop a clear understanding of the relevant therapeutic areas and competition

  • Develop technical knowledge of Merial products and competitors

  • Possess a strong understanding of the Canadian livestock industry, especially the cattle business

  • Have a clear understanding of the territory markets, market potential and keeping current on changes to these markets to ensure Merial products are positioned favorably

  • Participate in ongoing training and liaising with Technical Service Veterinarians for continuous knowledge improvement


  • Adhere to all relevant policies, procedures and legislation

  • Work within Merial standards and goals including but not limited to HSE

  • Complete all territory objectives including achieving sales target while operating within specified expense budgets

  • Undergraduate university degree or equivalent

  • Previous Pharmaceutical sales experience in Animal Health

Experience & Skills:


  • Excellent time and territory management skills as demonstrated by prioritizing detailing schedule based on potential return on investment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated skills in making professional presentations and facilitating education seminars

  • Computer literate with:

  • Intermediate experience in MS Excel (spreadsheets), MS Power Point (presentations), MS Word ( word processing) and other MS applications

  • Experience building strong relationships with key points of contact within a territory

  • High level of self-motivation and proven ability to work as a home-based sales professional

  • Credible persuasive skills are of paramount importance to close sales.
