Emergency Vehicle Technician

The Emergency Vehicle Technician will support the PAE contract in Iraq. This position will report to the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor. The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.


  • Perform responsible preventative maintenance and mechanical repair work related to the maintenance and repair of specialized fire vehicles, heavy fire apparatus, and related mechanical equipment.

  • Determine preventative maintenance needs, provides necessary maintenance and repairs for all fire vehicles, including heavy fire apparatus, and equipment.

  • Check operating efficiency of fire vehicles, heavy fire apparatus, and fire mechanical equipment.

  • Determine stock needs, and orders and maintains replacement parts and supplies.

  • Diagnose and Repair engines, transmissions, brake systems, hydraulic systems, water pumps and accessories.

  • Ensure pump systems provide appropriate volumes of water at specified pressures during periodic and required annual pump testing.

  • Perform general maintenance of all fire equipment including oiling and lubricating various components.

  • Perform heavy vehicle systems and component failure analyses.

  • Ensure fire apparatus conforms to National Fire Protection Association (N.F.P.A.) standards.

  • Respond to emergency callouts and mutual aid requests for mechanic services, and performs emergency field repairs on fire apparatus and related equipment.

  • Provide input to staff regarding budget, equipment utilization, equipment replacement and equipment needs.

  • Develop specifications for new fire apparatus and equipment.

  • Provide for overall management of the Fire Department fleet of emergency response apparatus, and staff/support vehicles.

  • Provide direction to the Mechanic Apprentice, temporary assistants, and/or interns in shop related duties.

  • Provide classroom and hands-on instruction to Fire Department personnel pertaining to maintenance and operation of fire apparatus and related equipment.

  • Attend regular training to maintain basic and advanced skills and certifications.

  • Assist the Maintenance Supervisor in identifying appropriate training opportunities for Heavy Vehicle Mechanics and the Apprentice Mechanic with a goal of providing succession training.

  • Perform related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.

  • Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment

  • Keep tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition

  • May assist in training lower-level workers in automotive mechanic techniques

  • Road test vehicles

  • Complete records, maintains tools and equipment, and performs various clean-up activities

  • Observe and follow all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment

  • Perform other duties and activities as directed.


  • Knowledge of

  • Methods and tools used in repair and maintenance of fire vehicle apparatus, including diesel engines, fire pumps, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.

  • Basic record keeping and work order system procedures.

  • Diagnostic software as it relates to general automotive fleet, fire apparatus and heavy vehicle equipment.

  • N.F.P.A. standards for commercial and fire vehicles.

  • Microsoft Windows Office Suite applications and computerized fleet work order systems.

  • Ability to

  • Operate and drive a variety of fire vehicles and equipment.

  • Understand, diagnose and repair / troubleshoot modern fire apparatus electrical systems, including computerized engine, transmission and brake systems.

  • Use mechanic tools and diagnostic equipment with skill and safety.

  • Plan, organize, assign, and coordinate the work of assigned staff.

  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance or required duties.


  • Education: A high school diploma or GED.

  • Licenses: Valid truck driver’s license from Home of Record.

  • Security Vetting: Already possess a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT) or be able to obtain a favorable MRPT certification prior to being hired is required for the position. Must maintain eligibility at the required certification level for the duration of the contract.

  • Language Skills: Strong, professional, oral and written English communication skills. Must be able to read Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Technical Manuals in English

  • Citizenship: US Citizenship is not required.

  • Medical: Favorable passage of a drug screen and physical examination.


  • Relevant overseas automotive mechanical experience

  • Hands-on experience working with equipment manufacturers such as: OSHKOSH; E-One; Sutphen; Waterous; Darlay; and Hale.

  • Experience with other equipment such as: JAWS: Hurst, Centaur systems; AARF foam systems and dry-chem.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Previous out of home country experience is highly desirable and previous work experience in harsh environmental conditions is a plus.

  • Experience working with PAE.


  • Knowledge of ALL principles and processes involved in supporting automotive mechanical functions at an overseas facility

  • Knowledge of automotive repairs and maintenance

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer services

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that requires handling multiple tasks at a given time and rapidly adapting to changing priorities and schedules
