To maintain the cleanliness and sanitary conditions of the School and grounds.

Job Responsibilities:

30% Cleans offices, classrooms, laboratories, and other assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, dusting, and polishing.

30% Empties trash and recycling containers, transports waste material to outdoor refuse or recycling containers as appropriate. May be required to work around and/or handle hazardous materials such as transporting bio-hazardous waste boxes to storage for pickup; may be responsible for removing and disposing of autoclave bio-hazardous waste. Determines by visual inspection if material is acceptable or unacceptable for recycling, according to written standards.

15% Cleans, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using industrial size mops and/or commercial type floor machines. Operates wet/dry vacuum, carpet extraction equipment or other commercial equipment as required for cleaning and shampooing carpets or cleaning up after water leaks.

15% Moves/rearranges office furniture and lab equipment as well as sets up tables and chairs for special events such as Commencement, seminars, Open House, Fall Family Picnic, or any other scheduled event.

10% Other tasks: Clean windows and walls; report maintenance problems found in School; report the need for equipment and supplies for the building to the supervisor; clean equipment used in performance of assigned duties; wear safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, dust masks, etc.: perform other duties as assigned to maintain the cleanliness and sanitary conditions of the School and grounds.

Required Qualifications: At least six months of custodial experience.


May be required to demonstrate physical ability to perform manual work.

Special or Physical Qualifications: Must be able to ascend and descend the stairs of a three story building multiple times daily and stand for extended periods of time. Must have capability to stop, kneel, and crouch. Must be capable of moving furniture/objects that weigh at least 20 lbs. and transport cleaning carts and various equipment to different parts of the building.

Special Instructions: Due to the nature of the positions and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy statement 67. In accordance with University Policy Statement 18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on campus in the event of emergency or closure.

Pay above SER of $8.70 will depend on qualifications of candidate selected. An offer of employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment criminal background check. Assists in orientation of new employees, orders supplies, keeps time and attendance records, and makes work assignments.

Washes laboratory glassware by hand and/or automated washer; sterilizes glass and instruments by autoclave or dryers.

Mixes or blends cleaning solutions to proper concentrations as necessary for various tasks.

Serves, as needed, on a specialized floor maintenance crew whose work involves the principal responsibility for stripping, buffing, and waxing floors by using industrial grade machinery.

Serves, as needed, on a specialized set-up crew with principal responsibilities for setting up tables, chairs, and other furniture for special meetings, banquets, or other occasions.

Serves, as needed, as housekeeper of an institution official's home, such as a university president, etc.

Performs many varied custodial tasks related to the upkeep of buildings and grounds.
