Your tasks and responsibilities
The Principal Engineer - Process Dynamics & Optimization (PDO) will use quantitative data analysis in conjunction with scientific and engineering knowledge in order to support large interdisciplinary teams with monitoring and understanding of the manufacturing bio-processes. This position will be a part of the PDO Engineering group that leads the development and implementation of process data analysis technologies and provides support for the entire manufacturing process and process development activities.
The primary responsibilities of this role, as Principal Engineer – PDO, are to: • Interact with multiple functional divisions on the production site and process development to support activities and projects in the areas of process monitoring, root cause analysis, process understanding and process improvements; • Lead efforts and provide expertise in data collection and extraction out of production IT systems and organization of data in databases; • Provide expertise in the development of new tools/applications for process monitoring; • Lead efforts in advanced statistical analyses (inferential, descriptive, experimental design (DoE), multivariate data analysis (MVDA) and statistical signal processing); • Develop mathematical models for bio-manufacturing processes and cell metabolism; • Propose, develop and implement technical solutions in the aforementioned areas; • Provide technical assessments based on data analysis and process knowledge; • Author technical reports.

More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following: • Ph.D. in Engineering or Scientific based discipline with two (2) to four (4) years of relevant experience; or • M.S. in Engineering or Scientific based discipline with four (4) to six (6) years of relevant experience; or • B.S. in Engineering or Scientific based discipline with more than eight (8) years of relevant experience; • Demonstrated experience in biological process development or manufacturing sciences environment with the use of design of experiment (DoE) and statistical analysis; • Ability to independently develop and implement complex technical solutions; • Ability to lead portions of larger projects and to meet customer needs in support of business goals; • Subject matter expert in data-mining, data analysis and mathematical modeling of biological • processes; • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills; with the ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex concepts and summarize the findings of technical work to management; • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and take initiative; • Demonstrated ability to learn about new technical topics and develop new technical skills quickly; • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills; • Strong background in descriptive and inferential statistics, MVDA and DoE; • Knowledge of computer programming; • Knowledge of the FDA PAT and QbD initiatives; • Experience using quantitative analysis (e.g. mathematical modeling, statistical and/or numerical analysis) for the improvements of commercial bio-pharmaceutical processes; • Applied knowledge of chemometrics.
Preferred Qualifications: • Working knowledge of MATLAB; • Working knowledge of databases.
