The West Texas VA Health Care System (WTVAHCS) provides a variety of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as offering numerous educational programs. Outpatient services include: Ambulatory Care Service, Mental Health, Women's Health, Transition and Care Management, Home Based Primary Care, Tele-Health, Anticoagulation Clinics, Ophthalmology, and Dentistry. Skilled nursing care and acute rehabilitation is provided in the Community Living Center, with specialty referrals to other VISN 17 facilities and community services. Staffed with approximately 600 employees, the facility serves counties in West Texas and New Mexico area, with a Veteran population of approximately 57,000. The WTVAHCS is part of the VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network, VISN 17 and is centrally located at the crossroads of Interstate 20 and Highway 87 in Big Spring, Texas with Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's) located in Abilene, Odessa, San Angelo, Ft. Stockton, Texas and Hobbs, New Mexico.

The West Texas VA Health Care System, Big Spring, Texas is currently recruiting for a Dental Assistant. The incumbent performs chair side assistance duties in all phases of restorative, prosthodontics, surgical, endodontic, and periodontal treatment as provided in general dentistry in Dental Service. He/she will assist in oral surgery and periodontal surgery at least 25% of that time; receives patients and schedules appointments for treatment; records information as directed by Dentist on prescriptions and a variety of forms related to dental care for signature of Dentist; maintains dental equipment in a clean and operative condition; properly stores and maintains adequate levels of supplies; prepares and arranges all instruments and materials needed for each treatment; prepares patient and operatory; assists in a monitoring patient by noting vital signs and adheres to necessary aseptic precautions throughout treatment. * *Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and may vary by the hiring facility

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.
  • Certification. Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.
  • Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence. Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board Inc.; ORSuccessful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry; ORSuccessful completion of a radiation health and safety program examination approved by a state board of dentistry or the Department of Defense (DOD).
  • Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for certification of radiologic competence may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate dental assistant under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This will result in removal from the GS-681 series and may result in termination of employment.
  • Certification in basic life support methods is highly desirable.
  • Certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes DANB as the national certification for Dental Assistants. DANB certification is not required, but highly desirable for the appointment of Dental Assistants up to and including the full performance level, and is required for all positions

Grade Determinations:

GS-6 - Experience: At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-5 grade level i.e. (Specialized experience of 3 years required) that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the follow technical KSA's:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to identify normal oral anatomy.

  2. Advanced knowledge of instruments, materials, and standardized dental procedures in all phases of restorative, surgical, endodontic and periodontal care and procedures.

  3. Ability to monitor and perform basic interpretation of vital signs.

  4. Ability to independently provide procedure-specific patient education and appropriate referral of patient concerns to treating dentist.

  5. Ability to capture standard and special denal images of good diagnostic quality in tradition or digital formats.

  6. Ability to perform maintenance on dental equipment used for routine and specialty dentistry.

  7. Ability to enter and retrieve data utilizing electronic dental records.

  8. Ability to perform dental assistant-appropriate laboratory procedures.

*Physical Requirements: *Long periods of standing, walking, sitting, and bending are required. Above average manual/digital dexterity and the ability to work in confinements of a dental operatory are integral requirements. It is also necessary to lift up to 30 lbs from floor to counter and to transfer patients from the wheelchair the dental chair and back.
