Job Summary – The Director, Supply Expense Management-Surgery is responsible for leading non-labor expense savings, product standardization, and utilization throughout the surgical services business line for an independent hospital to a large healthcare system. This position will utilize HealthTrust’s value analysis methodology that includes assessing applicable financial, clinical, operational, and evidence based literature for selection, evaluation, monitoring, and implementation. Develops and maintains a collaborative relationships with clinical, administrative, and healthcare system staff to ensure effective, results-oriented outcomes.

Duties (included but not limited to):


  • Assess; provides leadership, and direction in the area of supply expense management related to non-labor expense within surgical services to support organization’s strategy.

  • Assimilates information from variety of sources, able to analyze data and makes recommendations and executes a course of action.

  • Develops, implements, and coordinates within the hospital or system:

  • Policies and procedures related to supply expense management.

  • Value Analysis process

  • Product standardization and utilization

  • Directs and/or leads cross-functional teams to develop and implement solutions to complex supply expense solutions within surgical services.

    Customer Service

  • Interacts and develops relationships with internal and external stakeholders to better understand needs and challenges, and sets achievable customer expectations.

  • Supports customer’s through maintaining the “Streetwise” database to ensure supply improvement ideas are up to date and new ideas are published in a timely manner.

  • Utilizes customer feedback to improve products and services

  • Participates in the selling process, as needed.


  • Provides and implements cost saving enhancement strategies within surgical services

  • Demonstrates the ability to analyze financial and clinical data to identify variation opportunities and make recommendations to the team.

  • Demonstrates the ability to track and analyze financial data for initiatives and projects.

  • Develops standardized documents, processes, and calculations for use by the supply expense management team to quantify supply savings solutions.

  • Demonstrates financial acumen which includes providing the customer with a cost/benefit analysis.


  • Executes on surgical supply expense improvement incorporating cost, quality and outcomes.

  • Applies strong data analysis skills to translate into an actionable plan.

  • Demonstrates the ability to develop a project plan for major projects.

  • Develops milestones for projects to determine outcomes and deadlines are achieved.

  • Directs multiple projects and tasks in a fast paced environment and the ability to prioritize, organize and coordinate to achieve deadlines

    Bachelor’s degree in Business, Health Administration, or Nursing is required. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, will consider a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. A college graduate degree is highly preferred at the master’s level, such as MSN, MHA, or MBA.

    A minimum of five (3) years of surgical services nursing experience in a hospital setting with experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified above. Clinical Value Analysis experience highly preferred with experience evaluating complex clinical product utilization and physician preference items such as orthopedics, spine and cardiology. Computer skills with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel required. Software skills with Micro Strategies, Tableau, or other data warehouse programs highly preferred.
