NOTE: Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance. This Intermittent position is located in the Chaplain Section of the VA Boston Healthcare System. The primary purpose of this position is to provide music for worship services. It is located in Brockton, MA. Major duties and responsibilities include:
- Serves as a piano player, providing musical performance and accompaniment at Catholic and Protestant worship services;
- Ensures music is appropriate for the worship setting;
- Ensures proper use of furnished keyboards and alerts Chaplain Service of maintenance needs;
- Respects and protects patient's privacy and position as a patient in a federal medical center;
- Adheres to the standards of conducts and performance; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Musician, GS-3: Experience: You must have at least six months general experience (any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work or experience that provided familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the position). Experience such as skills and knowledge necessary to play music using a piano/keyboard for services; this includes the ability to read common music notation, including the ability to sight-read. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties performed; month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.
OR- Education: You may substitute specialized experience with education if you have one year of successfully completed post-high school education with courses that included study in music or related fields. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a technical school. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
OR- Combination: You may have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as described above, which may qualify. You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
Skill in communication and interpersonal relations Knowledge necessary to play music using a piano/keyboard for Catholic and Protestant services Knowledge of the literature of church music, both Catholic and Protestant
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work is primarily sedentary with little need for physical exertion; however, physical demands require some standing walking, bending, lifting and sitting. Dexterity to play the piano/keyboard is required. Ability to play the piano/keyboard over the course of a one to two-hour worship service is required. The work is performed primarily in the Chapel or other areas designated for worship services. The Musician works in close proximity to patients and the general public, and therefore can be occasionally exposed to communicable diseases and/or behavioral disturbances. The environment involves everyday risks and normal safety precautions inherent in a hospital setting.
