Job Overview

The position of Nurse Anesthetist is located in the Division of Clinical Services, Branch of Operating Room Services, Blackfeet Service Unit, Browning, Montana. This position reports to the Supervisory Medical Office (Surgery).

  • Administers general anesthesia to induce the patient to the proper state of narcotics utilizing a variety of drugs and techniques, and regional anesthesia to produce insensitivity to surgical stimulants.
  • Manages patient condition closely throughout surgery.
  • Provides consultation services for the Pain Management Program.
  • Manages the post-anesthesia care of patients

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. (One year of nursing experience as a military corpsman that has been accepted by a State licensing body may be accepted in lieu of education at the GS-4 level.)

Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment. No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-13: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. At GS-9 and above, many positions require experience in a specialty area of nursing

Examples of qualifying specialized experience for GS-13 level include: Plan, organize, direct, coordinate and evaluate a program of nurse anesthesia care. Administering general, regional, and topical anesthetics, monitoring patient during operation to maintain the proper stage of narcosis and to prevent overdose, and/or providing post-operative care to patients to minimize/eliminate adverse reactions from anesthesia. Perform as a mentor, preceptor or nurse educator providing didactic and clinical instruction for graduate level nurse anesthesia students and/or other nurse anesthesia care providers. Participate in the development of anesthesia patient care audit processes involving in-depth review and analysis of anesthesia records..

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Applicants for nurse anesthetist positions at GS-9 and above must have graduated from a course of study for nurses in anesthesia of at least 18 month's duration that was accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for the year of their graduation.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
