The Global Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) department is part of the Global Strategy & Business Development (S&BD) unit, a Global Enabling Function within Sanofi Group. The mission of Global BD&L is to seek and execute external growth initiatives to address the Sanofi Group´s strategic priorities. This mission is fully supporting Sanofi´s 2015-2020 strategic roadmap, specially aligned with the following strategic priorities: Reshape the Portfolio and Sustain Innovation in R&D.

The key activities of Global BD&L are the search & assessment, evaluation, structuring, negotiation and closing of strategic alliances with external companies, involving products, technologies and other product-related assets.

The Central Transactions Director position is a key enabler of the achievement of Sanofi’s corporate objectives of reshaping our portfolio and accelerating growth by executing the right licensing and collaboration opportunities. The main focus of this position is to lead or support, depending on the opportunity, overall execution of transactions across Global Business Units (GBU), geographies, and stages of R&D. Digital health will be a particular focus be it enabling platform technology to innovative solution as a new product or business though it will not be limited to only digital opportunities. Additionally, the range of opportunities extends for business solutions to be commercialized to platforms that improve operations and effectiveness of functional activities such as research, development, commercial, medical, and market access. Sanofi will explore device (e.g. wearable sensors, diagnostics, drug delivery), software (e.g. analytics, clinical decision support, patient engagement, medication adherence), and care delivery (e.g. telehealth, technology enabled services, virtual services) to support business and R&D strategy. This person will be critical to all business development related activities and will work in close relationship and coordination with other central teams including Due Diligence, Valuation, Legal and GBU BD Business Partners as well as key stakeholders of the opportunity. Transactions can include in-licensing, collaborations, co-development / co-promotion, option agreements in addition to other types of innovative partnerships.

Mission and Objectives / Key Accountabilities

  • With guidance from the Central Transaction Lead and GBU BD Business Partner, lead or support business development transactions across all therapeutic areas , platform technologies, stage of development, however with specific focus on digital health opportunities ranging from standalone products / solutions / services to technology platforms that enable pharma/biotech enterprise (e.g. analytics capabilities for R&D, multi-channel marketing)

o Contribute to and lead cross-functional teams including senior scientific, technical, finance, commercial, medical, market access, industrial affairs, regulatory and other functional representatives to develop optimal deal structures

o Contribute to and lead teams in business case development, financial modeling, and valuation analysis incorporating probability, time, cost, budget impacts, and returns to allow for optimal strategic and investment decision making

o Develop deal structures and term sheets to drive or support negotiation of deal terms with 3rd parties

o Work closely with Legal, Finance and other BD&L functions on term sheet, contract development and execution

o Present and make recommendations to senior management

  • Develop and maintain relationships with a wide array of industry participants including management teams at biotechnology and pharma companies, venture capitalists, academic institutions, and investment bankers

  • Gather benchmarks and analyze comparables of BD transactions



  • BA/BS required; MBA, MD, or advanced scientific degree (MS/PhD) is very strongly preferred

Experience & Knowledge

  • 7 years of work experience in the biotech/pharma / or tech industry, minimum of 2 years in digital health space either from an investor, strategic partner, or start-up perspective

  • Demonstrated track record of working and leading cross-functionally with scientific, finance, and/or commercial team members

  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical / biotech / medical device industry(ies), especially product development and/or commercialization

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation skills

  • Strong desire to pursue a career in business development

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally 20-30%


Fluency in written and spoken English.

Knowledge of additional languages (preferred).
