IT oversees critical functions that enable the day-to-day operations of the entire Ally Financial enterprise.* **Position Description*

Provide technical leadership and support on all the stages of database Architecture, Implementation and/or database related operational support.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as the highest level technical expert in the latest database technologies and architecture
  • Develop policies, security baselines, and configuration standards for database usage
  • Ability to work independently and to resolve complex SQL Server issues
  • Setting up and resolving issues with SQL Server data replication environments
  • Recommend database architectural direction and engineering approach based on understanding of evolving database trends and enterprise business objectives
  • Participate in project meetings, as necessary, to understand application database requirements
  • Act as key technical contact point for all database architecture decisions within a given project and ensure that appropriate level of architecture reviews are conducted
  • Advise project teams of database architecture standards, security standards, methodology and processes.
  • Acts as SME in the plan and design of new solutions
  • Implement and enforce database security based upon best practice, SOX regulations, and company policies
  • Provide support on all the stages of database engineering and/or database-related deployments
  • Ensure compliance with database standards across the platform
  • Provide solutions to development teams when proposed solutions do not comply with architectural, configuration, performance, or security guidelines
  • Proactively monitor the databases and run diagnostic tools to identify performance bottlenecks
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database performance and non-performance related issues either independently or in conjunction with other DBAs
  • Provide recommendations for engineering and operational process improvements
  • Participate in disaster recovery drill. Manage backup/recovery for database instances
  • Perform database resource capacity planning
  • Install new database instances and upgrades. Perform cross-platform database migrations
  • Provide database performance subject matter expertise and work with application development/sustain teams to tune SQL queries as required
  • Support on call duties including maintenances / deployment during off-hours / weekend as needed
  • Implement the spirit of the customer first with his/her associates, colleagues, customers and vendors
  • Build relationships and fosters teamwork


  • Information Systems, Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree or equivalent
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills
  • Strong service orientated, collaborative attitude with both peers and internal customers
  • Constant process improvement thinking to reduce delivery time and increase customer satisfaction
  • 10+ years of database design, engineering & operations/support experience
  • Ability to work independently and to resolve complex issues
  • Ability to work with diverse internal and external groups including solution and third party vendors in a constructive and collaborative manner
  • Ability to think strategically, balancing long and short-term priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to follow project management best practices in support of large, complex, enterprise projects
  • Ability to estimate required work effort
  • Highly developed problem solving skills within their area of database technology leading to reduced impact to customers
  • Ability to negotiate and build consensus with various stakeholder groups
  • Ability to makes complex ideas or situations clear, simple, and/or understandable
  • Knowledge of IT architecture, infrastructure standards, database platforms and programming languages and tools
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of emerging technologies and trends that could impact the field and the business
  • Willingness to learn the business and new technology

Technical Skills Required

  • In depth and Hands on technical experience in SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 12, SQL Server 14
  • Experience with SQL Server High Availability technologies e.g. Always On, Database Mirroring, Log Shipping
  • Experience in engineering and sustaining SQL Server instances in a windows clustered environment
  • Experience in data encryption at rest and in-transit using native SQL server technology
  • Experience in SSRS, SSIS and DTS
  • Experience with scripting & automation
  • Additional Experience in Oracle database technologies a plus
