Volvo Group Distribution Development Manager - Marine in Chesapeake, Virginia


Responsible for the creation and implementation of the Marine - Dealer Development Strategy in North America, Latin America and the Caribbean Region. Manage all business related business activities between the distribution network and Volvo Penta. Develop the overall dealer network, improve and upgrade competencies in order to ensure attainment of our marine growth initiatives. This position will be based in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation & ongoing management of the enhanced dealer network and structure through recruitment and selection of competent dealers

  • Conduct competency analysis and structure initiatives and activities to grow dealer ability to support our marine business growth

  • Develop SWOT analysis to effectively understand the competitive distribution environment in order to leverage our strengths and opportunities

  • Develop and maintain an active list of prospects

  • Review, develop, implement and assist with the auditing Dealer Operating Standards (DOS) across the dealer network

  • Work together with a cross-functional team in auditing dealer performance to our DOS

  • Assist in market analysis and customer satisfaction index activities to provide feedback on our marine team’s and dealer’s performance

  • Drive discussions with under-performing dealers; coordinating the execution of terminating those dealers when needed

  • Support the dealer network dealer development activities to effectively grow the number of locations

  • Coordinate the implementation of aftermarket solutions for OEM customers

  • Coordinate dealer interface with OEMs/users

  • Assist with revenue growth parts, accessories, engines and soft products

  • Facilitate internal marine dealer review board/council

  • Coordinate participation of appropriate Volvo Penta personnel w/quarterly Mtgs.

  • Maintain prospect lists/dealer/sub-dealer location mapping.

  • Coordinate dealer advisory council activities.

  • Manage regional shows and events

  • Develop & analyze data to prepare & present status reports and Business review updates

  • Provide or coordinate dealer training as needed to ensure quality of service and to protect & grow the Volvo brand

  • Direct and advise dealers on improvement activities

  • Establish a process to monitor, measure and report planned vs. actual objectives achieved

  • Perform other duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned by management to support Volvo Penta goals and objectives

Global Support

  • Work with global account managers to review distribution plans for OEM customers who are exporting products into Region Americas

  • Identify the marine leisure/commercial key target market areas

  • Communicate and build global relationships with global account and application managers

  • Be knowledgeable of Volvo Penta engines and our strengths and weaknesses against competitive products

  • Coordinate with the sales team to ensure that the service network is appropriate and fully effective

Dealer Business

  • Coordinate support for Volvo Penta dealers and new dealer prospects

  • Knowledgeable of all Volvo Penta Dealer Programs

  • Train dealers with an understanding of programs in marketing, warranty, credit, parts and service. Identify Volvo Penta contact/specialist to handle complex technical issues that may arise. Follow-up to see that dealer questions and/or issues have been resolved

  • Participate in sales training seminars. Promote various sales and marketing programs

  • Attend and participate in OEM Dealer Sales Meetings, retail boat shows, and other events as needed

  • Coordinate dealer sales and product benefit training to ensure that sales efforts from the dealer network are consistent and high quality - deliver as needed

  • Attend and participate in meetings, shows and events as required

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Excellent organization skills

  • Proven record of accomplishment with OEM, distributor and dealer customer base

  • Proven track record of delivering outstanding results within agreed upon time frames

  • Strong balance of marketing and sales skills

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Products (Power Point, Excel, etc.)

  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), Required

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration Finance, Economics or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience; MBA preferred

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working with distribution networks in the industrial, marine or automotive industry

  • Marine engine sales and/or aftermarket experience a plus

Leadership Competencies

  • Must demonstrate a high level of competence in each of the Volvo Leadership Competencies at “Emerging Leaders” level

Physical Requirements

  • Requires standing, walking, lifting and/or move up to 10 pounds

  • Requires walking, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching

  • Requires frequent out-of-town travel including international travel (50-75%)
