Network Planning and Scheduling Overview

The Network Planning & Scheduling department is responsible for strategic and operational decisions related to the flight network at our 8 hubs. We evaluate aircraft configurations, fleet acquisitions/retirements and determine the long term strategy of United’s hubs and spokes. We plan near term and future flight frequencies for existing and new markets, both domestically and internationally. We schedule each of our 5,000 daily departures on our wide-, narrow-body and regional aircraft fleets. We optimize aircraft flows for passenger connectivity and ensure the flight schedule is operationally feasible and reliable. We look at revenue and cost performance of all of our flights to optimally deploy seat capacity and maximize network profitability.

Job Description

The Analyst role is responsible for optimizing narrow body and express fleeting and making day of week frequency adjustments to balance revenue/costs within operational constraints. Responsibilities include the following (but are not limited to):

  • Optimize day of week capacity via frequency adjustments for North America

  • Optimize day of week narrow body and express fleeting

  • Operational review including station gating, maintenance overnight percentages, critical connections



  • Mustbe a current undergraduate student student pursuing a degree in Business,Finance/Economics, Transportation/Logistics or related area of study; seniorstanding preferred


  • Exceptionaltechnical, analytical and problem solving skills required

  • Abilityto handle simultaneous projects and adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment

  • Strongverbal and written communication skills; solid interpersonal skills with focuson teamwork

  • Provenproficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel


  • Completion of at least one internship or work experience in ananalytical role is required

  • Airlinescheduling, planning or operations experience a plus but not required


  • Position is based in Chicago, IL

  • Target start date is summer 2017

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
