Continuous Improvement & Enterprise Optimization Overview

Continuous Improvement & Enterprise Optimization (CIEO) focuses on how we can advance the quality and efficiency of what we do across our operations and around the world. The objective of the group is to provide thought leadership through business insights and advanced analytics that challenge the status-quo. We partner with variety of business units (e.g. Airport Operations, Technical Operations, Network Planning, Revenue Management, etc.) in order to create value through excellence in process improvement, change management, analytical modeling and research.

Job Description

Interns will work with various business units along with Analyst/Sr. Analysts in the CIEO division using analytical, technical, and consulting skills complete value-added projects at United Airlines. Work may include measurement & analysis (time and motion studies), statistical data analysis, process improvement applying continuous improvement concepts (including process mapping), and the development and validation of operations models. Interns are also expected to gain an understanding of both United as a business and how it generates value for its customers.

  • Analyzingand gathering data of United’s various operations to make fact-based,data-driven recommendations

  • Usingcomputer and technical skills, e.g. Excel and VBA, to create tools for use byother departments

  • Utilizingsimulation techniques in SIMIO/ARENA to analyze & improve businessprocesses

  • Performingmeasurement and analysis (time and motion studies) in different environments:airports, maintenance, customer contact centers

  • Presentcompelling findings to business divisions leading to material improvements



  • Mustbe a current undergraduate (Junior/Senior)/graduate student with a major in IndustrialEngineering, and have completed courses in basic industrial engineering andstatistics


  • Excellentanalytical and problem solving skills

  • Proficiencywith Excel and other Microsoft Office products

  • Experiencewith SIMIO/ARENA, Minitab, Visual Basic (VBA), and other programming tools ispreferred

  • Stronginterpersonal skills with focus on teamwork


  • Intern duration is Jul - Dec 2017

  • Internship requires at least a five month commitment

  • Position is based in Chicago, IL (travel may be required, up to 50-60%)

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
