Network Planning and Scheduling Overview

The Network Planning & Scheduling department is responsible for strategic and operational decisions related to the flight network at our 8 hubs. We evaluate aircraft configurations, fleet acquisitions/retirements and determine the long term strategy of United’s hubs. We plan near term and future flight frequencies for existing and new markets, both domestically and internationally. We schedule each of our 5,000 daily departures on our wide-, narrow-body and regional aircraft fleets. We optimize aircraft flows for passenger connectivity and ensure the flight schedule is operationally feasible and reliable. We look at revenue and cost performance of all of our flights to optimally deploy seat capacity and maximize network profitability.

Job Description

Internship opportunities will be available in the areas of Domestic/International Scheduling, Domestic/International Planning, Long Range/Strategic Planning, and Flight Profitability. Placement within the department will be determined during the selection process, dependent on your experience, abilities and best fit.

Tasks will vary by group and may involve the following:

  • Assist in the fleeting, flowing and gating of flights as part of our ongoing scheduling process

  • Provide profitability forecasts and make recommendations for frequency planning or new market adds

  • Analyze market forces like demand patterns, yield developments and other economic conditions

  • Build financial models to evaluate various strategic opportunities

  • Analyze our competitive environment and benchmark United against other airlines

  • Assist in the improvement of our systems, tools, and regular data processing



  • Mustbe a current undergraduate student (Jr./Sr. standing preferred) or graduatestudent pursuing a degree in Business, Finance/Economics, Transportation/Logisticsor related area of study


  • Exceptional technical, analytical and problem solving skills required

  • Airline scheduling, planning or operations experience preferred

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; solid interpersonal skills with focus on teamwork preferred

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint; experience in Microsoft Access; exposure to Visual Basic, SQL or other programming tools preferred, but not required


  • Experience in data modeling (mostly Excel based); exposure to data retrieval from internal and external data sources required


  • Position is based in Chicago, IL

  • Internship duration is May/Jun - Aug/Sep 2017

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
