Position Description: The Manager, Transportation Operations is responsible for the management of all flatbed and dry van shipments in the United States. This is referred to as “full truckload” freight management. The Manager is a hands-on leader responsible for the daily shipment of over 1,000 truckloads from over 50 USG and third party facilities in the U.S., with an annual freight spend exceeding $250 million annually. The Manager leads the full truckload freight team of 3 full time professionals.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Establish policies and procedures for the consistent management of full truckload freight services. Full truckload freight services management includes:o Carrier Relationship Management o Freight Cost Management – including Linehaul and Fuel Surcharge o On-Time Delivery management
* Participate and manage USG’s strategic initiatives across all full truckload shipments as well as represent USG in industry trade groups including the following:o Transportation sustainability (all modes) – EPA Smartway initiative o Trade Groups: Traffic Club of Chicago and Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP)
* For all USG facilities, identify full truckload freight requirements, including capacity and equipment needs, service areas and service requirements.
Negotiate all carrier rate structures, including any additional (accessorial) charges needed to support freight demand, as indicated above.
Provide leadership and expertise in facility infrastructure needs; specifically full truckload infrastructure requirements including marshalling yard and dropped equipment space requirements.
Manage full truckload freight solutions to minimize capacity risk and viability concerns, while maximizing capacity flexibility, service, and optimizing cost.
In addition to managing freight solutions are required above, establish policies to ensure a consistent supplier and geographic approach to full truckload is followed, create a significant presence for the role in managing key carrier relationships, and ensure that USG’s enterprise wide spend is consistently leveraged to result in optimal service and cost network-wide.
Implement policies and procedures to ensure carrier service levels meet or exceed USG’s On-Time Delivery goals.
Identify, cultivate, and establish freight relationships as required to service long-term business objectives.
Identify areas for cost improvement.

KEY POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: • B.A. or B.S degree (Supply Chain, Traffic, Transportation, Business, Accounting or Finance preferred) • MBA preferred (Finance, Strategy, Operations, or Technology) • 10 years relevant analytical, business or supply chain experience • Proven leadership and managerial skills. • Detailed knowledge of best practices. • Experience utilizing effective carrier management processes. • Ability to develop and advance employees into advanced assignments. • Strong analytical and fact-based decision-making approach. • Capable of building strong cross-functional relationships and understanding needs of internal customers. • Highly motivated and results oriented. • Effective communications skills, with ability to excite and engage the organization in achieving fundamental improvements in total cost of ownership performance. • Ability to go beyond this role to a larger role within the organization. • Self –confident and team-oriented. • The ability to identify and analyze problems, set priorities, and to recommend creative solutions. • The ability to negotiate successfully with a diverse group of business persons both internal and external to the company. • Willingness to travel as necessary.
