The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The purpose of this position is to provide nutrition expertise in planning, implementing and evaluating outpatient nutrition care, education and prevention with special emphasis on family-oriented education of the recently diagnosed diabetics; provides medical nutritional services to other outpatient clinics and not limited to Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Surgical, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, etc.; plans, controls and responsible for the medical nutrition therapy, nutrition education and participates in the continuous quality improvement process, meeting nutrition care standards of Indian Health Service and JCAHO and other regulatory agencies. Position/s reports to a Supervisory Dietitian at a PHS Hospital in Chinle, AZ, Gallup and Shiprock, NM or Health Clinics at Pinon or Tsaile, Arizona. This is an "open continuous" announcement to fill permanent position/s as vacancies occur at the sites noted above. Issuance of certificates will not occur until 15 days after the 'opening date'.
This position is being announced concurrently under Excepted Service Examining Plan/Merit Promotion Plan (ESEP/MPP) procedures. - Assists with planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the diabetes and other outpatient programs including nutrition services as part of the Innovations in Planned Care (IPC)
Reviews, selects, develops and disseminate suitable educational and counseling materials on normal and therapeutic nutrition for clients, community and for gestational diabetic clients
Assists with explanation of program and research findings to the Indian Health Service, Indian community and educational and allied groups concerned with the control and prevention of Type 2 Diabetes
Provides medical nutrition therapy to individuals and nutrition education to groups in outpatient or community settings directed at control of diagnosed diabetics and other disease prevention
Conducts nutritional assessment of clients, developing nutritional care plans with them and their families, consistent with cultural, social and physiological requirements
- Plans for and participates in group teaching and training of clients, staff and community members to expand services and increase public awareness of diabetes and control and prevention
- Provides consultation to professional and paraprofessional staff concerning diets and nutrition; records information in medical records regarding nutritional requirements, patient's progress, education, follow-up and etc., and performs other related duties as assigned

Position requires positive education. Degree in dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) in effect at the time of graduation. (Professional registration as a registered dietitian (R.D.) is evidence of meeting ADA requirements).
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by the American Dietetic Association that was conducted as part of the undergraduate program or after completion of the basic requirements for a baccalaureate degree, is qualifying at grade GS-7 for dietitians.
Applicants possessing professional registration as a Registered Dietitian meet the requirements for GS-7.
Substitution of Education for Experience: Graduate education may be substituted for experience for the GS-9 and GS-11 levels in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standards for General Schedule positions.
GS-9: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree; or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-7.
GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-9.
Registration: Each PHS dietitian must possess and maintain a current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Applicants must submit a copy of their current registration with application
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of *specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Dietitian position and that is typically in or related to the work of the Dietitian position to be filled. Examples of creditable experience are: experience as a Dietitian that included food service management, assessing nutritional needs of individuals or community groups, developing therapeutic diet plans, teaching the effects of nutrition on health, conducting research regarding the use of diet in the treatment of disease, or consulting on or administering a dietetic program with emphasis on providing patient care services in hospitals or other treatment facilities.

Position has promotion potential to the GS 11 grade level. Federal employees earn annual leave at a rate of 4, 6, or 8 hours per pay period which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.
