Position Description

The Assoc. Director-Supply Mgmt is responsible for leading all activities related to movement of material through the site. This includes the forecasting, planning, and scheduling of production for the site, procurement of raw materials and components, inventory control of raw materials and finished goods, and warehouse and transportation logistics. It also includes the scheduling and project management of new product introductions to the site. The role has broad responsibility for optimizing all aspects of the site supply chain processes and maintaining overall logistics goals and inventory levels in alignment with the Actavis strategic business plan. The Assoc. Director-Supply Mgmt has a high level of autonomy and freedom to act on many fronts, including determination of priorities as dictated by Corporate and site specific needs. The Assoc. Director-Supply Mgmt has responsibility for, and direct impact on, an extensive budget and its management, as well as for supply chain process development to enable Actavis to respond to industry trends. The position is responsible for managing business relationships across the Actavis global supply chain in order to support site production strategy. The Assoc. Director-Supply Mgmt directly supervises the Warehouse Supervisor, Production Planners, and Sr. Buyer at the site. The position reports to the General Manager.

Main Areas of Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities of the position are as follows. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide leadership and management direction for supply chain operations in a manner which meets or exceeds quality, production, budget, and delivery goals.

  • Coordinate day-to-day supply chain operations in alignment with site production goals.

  • Manage budgetary responsibility for supply chain across site including raw material & packaging component spend, offsite warehouse expenses, labor, and headcount.

  • Assemble a well-motivated and cohesive management team to accomplish long term business objectives and prepare for future growth by identifying, recruiting, and retaining quality staff to support operations growth.

  • Establish the expectation and standards, and the supportive environment, to ensure that staff has the capability to meet performance expectations. This includes building staff capability by providing ongoing coaching and mentoring of direct reports, providing timely recognition as well as performance counseling, building and executing development plans, providing career counseling for career progression, and ensuring succession plans are in place.

  • Contribute technical knowledge, specialized education, and professional expertise and experience to resolve business challenges.

  • Ensure all supply chain activities are in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, GMP, and internal Company policies.

  • Ensure all direct reports define and build the appropriate organization structures to support commercialization and launch strategies.

  • Proactively identify potential business issues and/or supply constraints, develop risk mitigation plans, and escalate, as appropriate.

  • Ensure that the planning and scheduling of all production of finished goods and the management of all inventory assets from components and raw materials through finished goods align with S&OP demand forecasts.

  • Implement strategies to ensure timely and continuous supply of materials that meet quality standards and production schedule.

  • Optimize on-site and off-site material warehousing footprint to ensure the most efficient and cost effective production operation.

  • Develop strategies to ensure supply chain readiness to support new product introductions.

  • Provide tools and techniques to enable continuous improvement in site supply chain operations.

  • Develop and track supply chain metrics to measure performance against objectives and implement strategies to improve performance.

  • Analyze marketing forecasts, assess the impact on manufacturing requirements, and launch supply chain strategies to ensure site output requirements are met.

  • Monitor industry and market trends and contribute to longer term site strategy to meet forecasts and future opportunities.

  • Prepare performance appraisals, provide performance coaching, and recognize and reward through competitive compensation to align individual and team performance to business success.

  • Justify and manage capital projects.

  • Drive efficiencies through continuous process evaluation and improvement.

  • Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships to include vendor selection, contract negotiations, and cost savings initiatives.


  • 15+ years experience in the pharmaceutical industry in functions such as operations, supply chain, or distribution

  • Experience working within a formal Sales & Operations Planning process and with SAP

  • Experience in aligning individuals and teams to business objectives

  • Experience in managing by metrics

  • Current understanding and application/interpretation of FDA and other regulatory guidance in a GMP pharmaceutical manufacturing environment

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing practices such as Lean, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, and System for Management

  • Demonstrated success in making effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to senior executives.

  • Knowledge of SAP and Microsoft Office skills required

  • Exhibits a high personal drive for excellence and demonstrates ability to establish high standards of performance and hold self and others accountable for performance results.

  • Champions the site strategy and direction and gains support within own organization for its implementation.

  • Establishes and communicates a clear vision and strategy for supply chain operations that has positive impact and inspires focused collective action to the achievement of goals.

  • Tasks self and organization to pursue continuous evaluation and improvement of supply chain processes in order to enhance quality, efficiencies and delivery to customers in accordance with the business plan.

  • Develops a strong management team that is process-oriented and has the appropriate technical skills and capabilities to execute to meet the business plan.

  • Recruits, develops, and retains a diverse, high quality workforce and grows capability in own organization. Ensures succession plans are in place.

  • Adeptly understands agendas, perspectives, and motivations of others and incorporates that understanding into negotiations, thoughtfully proposing solutions that effectively balance the interests and needs of all parties and skillfully gaining consensus on a way forward.

  • Is comfortable operating as part of a cross-functional leadership team and providing high quality contribution and leadership among the Supply Chain Group and other key functions, including Quality and Operations.

  • Engages positively at a Corporate and site level. Able to use influence positively and skillfully to find common ground with a wide range of stakeholders at the Corporate and site levels in order to achieve organizational goals.

  • Demonstrates the ability to make logical, well-informed, and well-timed decisions that are based on a broad organizational perspective and sound understanding of key organizational goals as well as quality assurance requirements, and takes timely action in a high-pressure production environment to ensure the delivery of high quality business results that achieve compliance standards and production goals.

  • Champions organizational change, develops strategies for overcoming resistance to change, and leads own function through change initiatives.

  • Demonstrates a personal commitment to site safety by actively fostering a safety culture and upholding all safety standards in the performance of job duties.


  • BS degree in technical, engineering or business discipline; MBApreferred.
