The nurse anesthetist regularly provides anesthesia care in unusually extensive and complex anesthetic procedures, up to and including open heart procedures, which are of prolonged duration and involve high risk patients, including development of individualized program of post-anesthesia care. Depending on experience, may participate in instructing and supervising of less experienced peers and as instructor in airway management, intravenous and intra-arterial line placement, monitoring techniques and advanced life support programs.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship: U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification: Full, unrestricted Licensure, Certification or Registration is required.
  • Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.
  • Additional Education: Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The AANA has compiled current listings of approved training institutions, which are published annually in the December issue of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Journal. The American Hospital Association in their "Guide to the Health Care Field" also publishes listings of approved training institutions annually in August.

Preferred Experience: Applicants typically have about 6 years of specialized experience, one year of which must reflect the ability to plan, organize, direct, coordinate and evaluate a program of nurse anesthesia care. Applicants may have obtained specialized experience as independent nurse anesthetist or senior nurse anesthetist.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: This is a direct patient care position and may require long hours of standing, walking, sitting at a desk entering patient information into a computer. Lifting and positioning of patients may be required. Moving and positioning equipment may be required.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Full time CRNA's will earn 8 hours of vacation per pay period. 26 pay periods in a year will equate to 26 days of paid vacation per year.
