Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope is looking for a Product Design Engineer to be part of a small, multidisciplinary, technology-oriented team to contribute to the development of new products, processes, and technologies at the premier building enclosure company in North America.

Job Description Summary

The Product Design Engineer will be part of a Research & Development team, dedicated to exploring emerging technologies and how they can be implemented in a complex industry. It is important that the Product Design Engineer be creative, have a broad engineering skill set (mechanical, electrical, structural), and a willingness to experiment on a wide variety of projects. Among the tasks the Product Design Engineer would be expected to perform:

  • Develop new product lines that will appeal to architects and designers. This would begin in the early ideation phase and would involve continued development after products are released. These are typically glass and aluminum extrusions, but may involve integrations with building structure, furniture elements, varied materials & finishes, power & IT, display technologies, etc.

  • Develop product performance specifications and validation plans

  • Determine material selection/evaluation. Primarily aluminum, glass, plastics, silicones, and adhesives

  • Research emerging technologies to explore their suitability for application within the industry

  • Identify necessary domain-specific knowledge to solve a given problem, and the strategies needed for the company to acquire that expertise

  • Develop prototypes as proof-of-concept for new product categories

  • Understand and explore new developments in manufacturing technologies

  • Investigate new technologies and workflows that could impact the process of distributing & installing building materials

  • Communicate research results via presentations

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of existing products via design or process

  • Perform FEA and other CAE analyses relating to new product design or continuous improvement

  • Coordinate with quality department to:

  • Evaluate internal and customer quality rejects and develop/implement corrective actions

  • Create in-process inspection plans and test methods

  • Coordinate with product performance and reliability testing

  • Identify cost saving process improvements and perform ROI analysis

The Product Design Engineer must be largely self-directed, and able to work on a number of different projects simultaneously. Strong communication skills are necessary, as well as an ability to work with employees from many different disciplines.
