C ONROE R EGIONAL M EDICAL C ENTER FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES POSITION DESCRIPTION

I. IDENTIFICATION:

TITLE: CLINICAL DIETITIAN DEPARTMENT: Food and Nutrition Services SUPERVISOR: Lead Dietitian

II . POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Food and Nutrition Services Director and the direct supervision of the Lead Dietitian, the Clinical Dietitian is responsible for performing functions of a specialized clinical nutrition service, such as nutrition assessment, modified diet formulations, patient nutrition education, and nutrition counseling and consultation. Assists in the nutrition education and inservicing of department employees, other hospital employees, and staff physicians. Assists in the quality improvement program. Participates in patient care conferences and in discharge planning to provide nutritional expertise to the team throughout the continuum of care. She/he will be responsible for age specific consideration of patients identified as Neonatal/Infant (Birth to 1 year), Pediatric (1-12), Adolescent (12-18), Adult ( 18-65) and Geriatric (65 ).

III. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

A. ADMINISTRATIVE: (% OF TIME = 35 % ) 1. Attends patient care conferences and discharge planning conferences to assure adequate and appropriate nutritional care throughout the continuum of care. 2. Actively participates in the department quality improvement program. 3. Participates in providing nutrition education and inservice training to department employees, other healthcare professionals, and staff physicians. 4. Provides nutritional expertise to diet clerks and other food service staff with complex diets or other relevant dietary issues related to patient care. 5. Maintains daily activities log. 6. Accurately enters all charges for nutritional care into computer on a daily basis. 7. Employee reflects HCA values and sensitivity to HCA ethics and compliance principles in his/her daily activities. a. Adheres to policies on appropriate access. b. Respects patient Confidentiality. c. Upholds code of conduct. 8. Performs other related duties as assigned. B. TECHNICAL: (% OF TIME = 15 % ) 1. Performs technical skills proficiently in accordance with established standards, as evidenced by annual validation processes. (Skills Competency Assessment Checklist attached.) 2. Provides nutritional assessments/consults according to policy guidelines and records results in medical record. 3. Instructs patients and caregivers on prescribed diets as ordered by the physician and according to policy guidelines. 4. Evaluates nutrient intake and monitors modified diets according to policy guidelines. 5. Monitors enteral and parenteral feeding regimes and documents results/recommendations in medical record according to policy guidelines. C. INTERACTIVE: (% OF TIME = 15 % ) 1. Maintains current knowledge of hospital and departmental standards which impact on position responsibilities. 2. Consistently maintains a professional level of conduct to all patients, physicians, fellow employees, and guests. 3. Ensures that problems/concerns regarding departmental or hospital activities are communicated appropriately. 4. Actively participates in departmental and hospital meetings, and other self-directed learning activities which promote growth in position responsibilities and improve the quality of services in the department. D. CUSTOMER SERVICE: (% OF TIME = 35 % ) 1. Displays initiative to see processes through to completion and offers assistance without being asked. 2. Demonstrates interpersonal competencies such as problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict management.
  1. Demonstrates an understanding of patient rights, including those pertaining to confidentiality, informed decision-making, and privacy.

    IV. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    A. Baccalaureate with major in nutrition, dietetics or a related field. Completion of an ADA approved internship or other ADA approved program. B. Registered Dietitian or registry eligible; Texas Licensed Dietitian or eligible for licensure. C. One or more years in clinical dietetics is desirable.

    V. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    A. Physical Activity--D.O.T. Strength Rating: L. B. Working Hazards or Risks--potential for exposure to infectious processes and hazardous substances within the hospital environment. C. OSHA Blood Borne Risk Category III (very limited exposure).
