Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

To qualify for this position, your resume must reflect sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the position for which you are applying. Individual Occupational Requirements GS-04: 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience OR 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation. To qualify based on specialized experience for the GS-04 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-3) that included duties such as: Manage a medical office setting, provide support services such as monitoring inventory, ordering supplies, scheduling appointments and handling forms for completion. Answer telephone, and properly triage calls into categories of routine, urgent, and/or emergent, and take appropriate action. Duties will include but are not limited to use of the computerized scheduling program to schedule patient appointments at the time they present to clinic or call to schedule an appointment, enter cancellations and no-shows as appropriate, make scheduling changes as needed, work with the Physical Therapist to maintain a functioning and flowing schedule, mail letters as appropriate per department policy. The incumbent will interview patients to obtain patient registration information prior to patient being seen in clinic. The incumbent will obtain and verify the health records and RPMS Patient Registration information for Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance eligibility for all patients seen prior to clinic visits GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level OR 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation To qualify based on specialized experience for the GS-05 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-4) that included duties such as: Operate, maintain, clean, and operate Physical Therapy department equipment, including hydrocollator, freezer, weights, and be able to set up any U.S. and electrical stimulation units. Administer the full range of physical therapy agents to include but not limited to heat, cold, estim, US, transfer procedures, manual therapy (excluding joint mobilizations), therapeutic exercises, therapeutic activities and patient instruction. Perform patient transfers safely and independently. Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning duties, as well as maintaining cleaning logs and daily temperature check logs for legal purposes. The incumbent will obtain and verify the health records and RPMS Patient Registration information for Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance eligibility for all patients seen prior to clinic visits. GS-06: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position To qualify based on specialized experience for the GS-06 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-5), you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-5) that included duties such as: Administer treatment procedures to patients based on physical therapist's treatment plan and will change this plan only with input and approval from the Physical Therapist, may have patients assigned to him/her by the supervisor. Adhere to regulations and rules set out in the Montana State Practice Act for Physical Therapy at all times. The incumbent will be familiar with and able to run the Electronic Health Record GUI so that he/she is able to register a patient; document chief complaint, POV (purpose of visit), treatment information in SOAP note format, patient education, length of treatment and services provided (billing information with appropriate codes). Identify patients whose health benefits are subject to prior approval. Call third party insurance provided to obtain prior approval and pre-certification for Physical Therapy visits as directed prior to patient's first clinic visit. Call patients to make appointments for Physical Therapy evaluation and ensure that the schedule maximizes treatment time slots. File printed patient notes from the Electronic Health Record GUI and all physical therapy related forms in correct order in medical record to keep Primary Care Providers aware of current patient status. Prior to returning charts to medical records, the incumbent will check reports to assure completeness and accuracy. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an assistant to one of the specialized therapies such as occupational, physical, manual arts, corrective, or educational therapy; or experience gained as an assistant or aid in patient care, social work, or psychology where the duties involved actual participation in physical medicine and activities of a hospital or clinic. General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
