Job Overview

The primary purpose/role of the position is to provide full range comprehensive and continuing health and medical care services to child, adolescent and adult psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients and families at the Crownpoint Health care Facility, satellite health centers. The purpose of the position is to function as the primary psychiatric nurse practitioner to provide specialized psychiatric service including clinical assessment and diagnosis to individuals with mental illness and prescribing psychiatric medications and treatment. This position is located at the Crownpoint Health care Facility, Crownpoint, New Mexico. This position will report to the Clinical Director. Responsible for child, adolescent and adult psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of a quality expected from an expert, experienced, nationally certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and keeping in good standing with New Mexico medical community standards of care.

  • Performs and documents a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that includes evaluation of mental status, current and past history of violence, suicidal or self-harm behavior, substance use, and level of functioning, health behaviors, trauma, and sexual behaviors, social and developmental history.
  • Manages psychiatric emergencies by determining level of risk and initialing and coordination of treatment, intervention and follow up.
  • Provides consultative psychiatric evaluations and recommendations to requesting healthcare personnel. Such consultations may occur in outpatient clinic, inpatient ward and satellite clinics.
  • Collaborates as a leader of the interdisciplinary mental health and other health care teams and provide psychiatric/mental health consultations to other team members, including primary care team.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency in mental health and psychiatry through continuing education, staffing meetings, workshops and contributes to the mission of facility through written or oral presentations.

  • Relocation expenses are authorized and will be paid. You will be required to sign a one year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the one year service agreement may result in repayment of relocation expenses.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally

designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Registration: Applicants must have active, current, registration as a professional nurse in a

State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United


Evaluation of Experience: Experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular

knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. At GS-9 and above, many positions require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

GS-12 Minimum Qualifications: One year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully in the duties of the position, that is typically related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 level or equivalent.

GS 12 Specialized Experience:

  • Provides direct clinical support to patients across the life-span by assessing plans and providing direct clinical support, comprehensive and therapeutic medical health care to individual geriatric, adult, adolescent and pediatric patients and their families with as-needed consultation with the medical staff;

  • conducts in-depth evaluation and diagnosis of psychiatric medication needs;

  • makes diagnosis and decisions concerning medical, psychiatric and nursing, care of patients, orders and/or performs screening and diagnostic tests and procedures;

  • gives direct psychiatric care in emergency cases

  • provide evaluation, crisis intervention and suicide assessments.

  • provides outpatient psychotherapy treatment to individuals, groups and families in a clinic, school forensic or other appropriate community settings;

  • Develop case management services for child abuse, suicide, family violence, chemical dependency and chronically mentally ill clients;

  • Collaborates with outside and internal entities to develop comprehensive services and provide continuity of care, provides assessments and consultations to medical staff on patients with co-morbid psychiatric conditions, assesses plans and is involved in meeting mental health needs of community and ground health needs with emphasis on socio-economic, epidemiological and cultural influence;

  • Documents data, patient assessment and care plan in acceptance form in electronic and/or manual medical records and in accordance with established guidelines and fulfills reporting requirements.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Work is on a regularly assigned schedule and rotational call back status to provide continuity of services to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS in homes, schools, clinics, job sites and other community locations within the assigned service unit.
