Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). This position is located in the Crownpoint Service Unit in the Department of Community and Preventive Health. The incumbent will coordinate/oversee all activities associated with the planning, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of the School Based Health Centers and Mobile Medical Van. The purpose of the position is to provide direction/supervision of the Medical Mobile Van under the scope of services of the Crownpoint Service Unit, to coordinate closely with the communities, IHS and the Tribal programs to provide community oriented services and direct patient / client care. This position will be reporting to the Division Director for Community and Preventive Health.


This position is located in the Crownpoint Service Unit in the Department of Community and Preventive Health.

Supervises the day-to-day operation of the school health care centers and the function of the school health technician in the school based health care setting . Is a member of the Professional Nursing health care team and provides comprehensive professional nursing care duties of the care of patients with a variety of conditions in School Based Health Center.

Interviews students to obtain pertinent health history and provides comprehensive screening. Identifies students at risk and develops a plan of action for the patient with providers in school based health centers. Assist the medical provider with visits, draws laboratory work when ordered, provides patient education, and facilitates follow up care by coordinating with the school health aide.

Maintains health records by documenting observation, nursing interventions, and therapeutic measures administered, working under the direction of Protocols of care established for the school based health centers. Updates and/or makes recommended changes for policies and procedures for the school based health centers or the mobile medical van on a yearly basis.

Assess and provides health care such as administer immunization, effects of medication to sure quality of care according to standing orders in school based health centers. Coordinate and/or supervises head start screening and school sport physicals for community health department.

Supervises the Mobile Medical Van's day-to-day operations by developing a plan of action for the care and maintenance of the Mobile Medical Van and equipment contained within. Organizes the mobile unit with supplies and re-orders supplies as needed for the use of the mobile unit by providers in the Crownpoint Service Unit.

Provides administrative support to the Women's Health Coordinator with follow up on abnormal pap smears and abnormal mammograms by contacting referral centers for reports and coordinating further care for patients with abnormal results. Maintains professional knowledge and skills by attending continuing education, staff meeting, and workshops.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-*For GS-09:Candidates must have had 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level to qualify for the GS-09 grade level. *For GS-11:Candidates must have had 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level to qualify for the GS-11 grade level. OR completion of all requirements for a doctorial degree (Ph.D or equivalent) OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:**Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Examples of the type of experience that will be credited are carrying out the duties of serving as a Nurse Specialist in the coordination and management of all activities associated with the planning, implementation, evluation and maintenance of the School Batsed Health Centers and Mobile Medical Van. Experience in management of abnormal women's health screening in a clinic setting that supports the Indian Health Service Electronic Health Record (EHR) and the Resource Patient Management System (RPMS) are defined as but not limited to Patient Care Component (PCC). Also have the experience of providing professional nursing care duties for patients, whose conditions warrant specialized care of a wide variety of injuries and illnesses. Experience includes assessment of the patient and develops an individualized nursing plan of care through admission interview of the patient and family members.

LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:Applicants must have possess active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States. Knowledge of and skills in current professional nursing practices are required in the particular field of nursing for the position being filled.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain registered nurse clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
