The Clinical Pharmacy Technician (CPT) provides supporting services for Clinical Pharmacy Specialists (CPS) in Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Treatment Clinics or other ambulatory care clinical areas. Given large number of patients needing treatment for hepatitis C at VANTHCS, the primary responsibility will be for this patient population until the majority of patients have been treated and the need decreases. At that point, the incumbent will transition to be an active member of the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) or Anticoagulation Team. The primary functions of the incumbent will include, but is not limited to the following: clinical logistical support, laboratory order coordination and prescription processing, assist with patient educational activities, documentation of medical information obtained directly from the patient in the electronic medical record, assistance with program quality assessments (QA) and quality improvement (QI) projects,perform clinic administrative and clerical tasks, scheduling support,participate in team and committee meetings, training and mentoring student and staff, and perform all the duties of lower graded technicians as required to support the service. On-site certification of clinical competency shall be completed prior to performing assigned clinical functions.


Tour of duty: Monday through Friday: 08:00 - 4:30pm (40 hr work week).

Certification.Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board(PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

Creditable Experience: To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of Pharmacy Technician practice.

Quality of Experience: To be creditable, Pharmacy Technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.


In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:


Experience.One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSA's at the next lower level:

Inpatient experience: Such as involvement with quality improvement activities and/or projects, ability to triage issues to the pharmacist or provider, direct and indirect interactions and communication with pharmacists, providers, and patients, and providing patient education. Applies customer service skills to patients receiving care for primary care related activities by phone and written communication. Knowledgeable of the operation and care of automated equipment. Understand the policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSA's and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSA's designated by and asterisk(*).

  1. Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities.*

  2. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes.

  3. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff.

  4. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment.

  5. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process.

  6. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures.

  7. Comprehensive knowledge controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures.

  8. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems.

Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists.For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time
