The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) provides administrative support to varying levels of clinical staff within the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT). The incumbent coordinates with the patient care team to effectively support the needs of the patient and the clinic. The incumbent is an integral part of the team and is expected to participate in the provisions of high quality, customer-focused care to the patients. Assignments include but are not limited to:

  • Accurate identification of patients using approved methods;
  • Scheduling/cancelling/re-scheduling appointments;
  • Consult management, assisting with Release of Information;
  • Insurance card scanning;
  • Processing provider orders, monitoring encounter completion and promoting registration;
  • Utilization of MyHealtheVet (MHV) and performing in-person authentication for Veterans.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Danville: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm; 7:45 am - 4:15 pm, Springfield & Mattoon: 7:45 am - 4:15 pm.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
  • Education or Training: Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or one year above high school; or equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
  • Certification. None required.

  • English Language Proficiency: Advanced Medical Support Assistants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations:In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.

GS-06 Advanced Medical Support Assistant:

Experience - One year of experience in clerical or office work that indicates the ability to aquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include but not limited to: Experience scheduling, canceling, rescheduling patient appointments, updating patient demographics, managing a wait list to verify and validate accuracy and resolve issues, and working with interdisciplinary teams to ensure high quality care for patients.

  • Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities, and organize the work in order to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to meet program objectives. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels.
  • Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process as it relates to access to care.
  • Advanced knowledge of managing a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.

*Preferred Experience: *Ability to type at least 40 wpm.
