VA Eastern Colorado HealthCare System (ECHCS) is complexity level 1a and provides a full range of state-of-the-art patient care services. ECHCS provides tertiary care and services to over 72,000 patients and is a major referral center for veterans living in Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, and New Mexico. ECHCS serves as an educational and research center, it is highly affiliated with medical and educational institutions. Health Care Services are provided at 15 different geographically dispersed locations incorporating nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics, two Primary Care Telehealth Outpatient Clinics, one local and one remote Community Living Center, Homeless Veteran's Domiciliary, a Community Referral and Resource Center, a Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center and VA presence on two DOD bases; Fort Carson and U.S. Air Force Academy covering a geographical area of over 10,000 square miles. ECHCS employs over 2,500 personnel in 150 occupations.
The SCI/D is located at the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center campus within the Veteran Affairs Eastern Colorado Health Care System (VA-ECHCS). VA-ECHCS's SCI/D Service is a VHA-designated SCI/D Center providing primary care and SCI/D specialty care with a full continuum of acute stabilization, acute rehabilitation, sub-acute rehabilitation, medical and surgical care, respite care, preventive services, sustaining health care, SCI/D home care, telehealth care and long-term care services consistent with VHA policies. The incumbent serves as a key clinical resource for the Medical Center Director and the Chief of Staff and is part of the clinical leadership team of the medical center.
The following criteria are essential:
Leadership acumen sufficient to provide direction for single and complex programs in the delivery of Spinal Cord Injury Services to inpatients and outpatients.
Management experience with strong administrative and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated skills in providing clinical interface with academic affiliates and other key stakeholders.
Management experience regarding university generated education programs and specialty training programs.
Demonstrated commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery.
Documented ability to coordinate a broad continuum of programs.
Demonstrates abilities to work well within an executive team.
Faulty appointment at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Clinical responsibilities include and not limited to:
Medical Director of a 30 bed inpatient Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder and Outpatient SCI/D support clinics.
Provide annual comprehensive preventive health evaluations by the SCI/D Center interdisciplinary team.
Ensure performance measures are met, e.g., access to care, patient satisfaction, patient outcomes and risk management.
Establish a Quality Assurance (QA) plan to include competency testing of physicians, nurses and administrative staff and the adequacy of equipment in SCI/D Service QA program.
Assists in the formulation of strategic planning for SCI in the form of long term goals and initiatives pertinent to the care of SCI patients.
Works with the Paralyzed Veterans of America NSO to identify and report SCI data as required.
Administrative responsibilities include and not limited to:
Direct supervision of section supervisors, administrative support personnel, physicians, and nurse practitioners.
Staff labor mapping, workload and productivity.
Establish guidelines, policies and procedures for the treatment and rehabilitation of SCI/D patients.
Provides input into fiscal planning to ensure adequate resources and funding are available.
Advises facility admin on the adequacy of services, medical equipment and support staff to ensure the accomplishment of the Services mission.
Monitors SCI clinic wait lists and access.
Liaison with ELT, VISN and National SCI Office.
Education/Training responsibilities include and not limited to:
Excellence in training for Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder residents, rehabilitation residents, orthopedic residents and medical students.
Excellence in training in allied health professionals (PT, OT, speech therapy students).
Creates a climate where continuous learning and self-development are valued.
Research responsibilities include and not limited to:
Develop, implement and maintain a program of research that addresses topics of importance to veterans with spinal cord injuries/disorders.
Actively participate in identification of avenues of novel SCI research as well as design of appropriate methodology and analytical approaches.
Facilitates translation of research findings into improved patient outcomes.
Customer Service responsibilities include and not limited to:
Effectively communicates with and utilizes other disciplines (e.g. nursing, medicine) to facilitate treatment planning and implementation.
Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care.
Relationship with supervisors, co-workers, patients, visitors and the general public is consistently courteous and cooperative in nature and overall, contributes to the effective operation of the case management program.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, with possibility of extended hours and weekends. NOTE: Candidate must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours. The candidate must be willing to be placed, detailed or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.

- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

- Board Certification in Physiatry, Neurology, Internal Medicine or Surgery with a subspecialty board certification in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.
- Demonstrated administrative leadership skills.
- Eligible for clinical privileges in spinal cord injury.
