VA Eastern Colorado HealthCare System (ECHCS) is complexity level 1a and provides a full range of state-of- the-art patient care services, and will soon be providing care in a new state-of-the-art hospital in Aurora, CO. ECHCS provides tertiary care and services to over 87,000 patients and is a major referral center for veterans living in Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, and New Mexico. ECHCS serves as an educational and research center, it is highly affiliated with medical and educational institutions. Health Care Services are provided at 15 different geographically dispersed locations incorporating nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics, two Primary Care Telehealth Outpatient Clinics, one local and one remote Community Living Center, Homeless Veteran's Domiciliary, a Community Referral and Resource Center, a Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center and VA presence on two DOD bases; Fort Carson and U.S. Air Force Academy covering a geographical area of over 10,000 square miles. The Urology RN provides care to patients receiving Urologic care. This care is primarily at the Denver VA Medical Center but may occasionally involve care in other locations in the Eastern Colorado Health Care System, such as Colorado Springs or Pueblo. The RN provides care to patients including minor procedure and education of patients such as clean intermittent catheterization and administration of BCG/Intrvesical chemotherapy, hormone shots for prostate cancer and penile injections for erectile dysfunction.

The nurse plans, organizes, and when appropriate, directs and supervises the activities of others such as medical assistants and ancillary personnel. The nurse demonstrates excellent communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Based on education, experience, and competency, the nurse may be assigned responsibilities as preceptor and/or charge nurse. The nurse functions as a resource for colleagues as needed.


Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties:

In addition to meeting all of the Nurse I, Level 1, 2, & 3 requirements the nurse:

Work Schedule: 40 hour work week Monday-Friday with the exception of holidays. 8 hours tours between the hours of 8:00am-6:30pm. Occasional overtime may be needed.

NOTE: Candidate must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours, and extended hours. The candidate must be willing to be placed, detailed or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. *Grade Determinations: *The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
