The VA Central Iowa Health Care System provides a full continuum of care between the Des Moines campus and our Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's) and is one of the Medical Centers that make up the VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23). Employee selected may be expected to perform duties at other duty sites within VA Central Iowa Health Care System based on the needs of the organization.

The Extended Care and Rehabilitation Hospice and Palliative Care Physician will practice within their scope of practice in accordance with their credentialing and privileging. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee daily operations, and provide clinical, programmatic and administrative leadership to the Hospice and Palliative Care service.
  • Provide physician services, clinical input and oversight for all patient treatment plans consistent with hospice and palliative care philosophy.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient consultation services in hospice and palliative care. Be an active participant and facilitate clarification and the development of patient and family goals of care.
  • Improve access to Hospice and Palliative care as experienced by patients, their families and providers. Amplify the awareness of the concepts, role and availability of Hospice and Palliative Care services among ambulatory, home-based, specialty and acute care clinicians. Facilitate access to appropriate supportive care services
  • Consult with attending staff as requested so that symptom management for patients is effectively and expeditiously accomplished.
  • Apprise the Hospice and Palliative Care team of medical care and practice standards
  • Plan and direct educational experience for medical students, residents, and fellows assigned to Hospice and Palliative Care.
  • Provide counsel to the Extended Care and Rehabilitation Service Line leadership regarding process improvement, program development, and policy decisions related to Hospice and Palliative Care service.
  • Train ambulatory, specialty and acute care clinicians to provide basic palliative care through improvements in service delivery policies, procedures and interfaces. Develop and provide education to Iowa City staff and coworkers.
  • Full and appropriate documentation of patients care services to support professional billing for these services.
  • Weekly participation in interdisciplinary team meetings to review active cases, and to establish appropriate plan of care.
  • Participation in on-call coverage for Palliative Care/EC&R; Programs.
  • Develop responsive and productive training partnership with the local academic affiliates (including enhancing Hospice and Palliative Care service partnership with the Hospice and Palliative Care fellowship training program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics).
  • Pursue opportunities for partnering with other specialties, including Community Living Center, Geriatric, Home-Based Primary Care, Spinal Cord Injury, ALS, Pulmonology, Surgery and Oncology within the facility.
  • Be involved in analysis of data leading to the development of new initiatives, programs, hospital policies and protocols for the improvement of quality of Hospice and Palliative care. Analyze workload data and work with teams to maximize productivity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: Physicians that are board certified or board eligible in Hospice/Palliative Care are preferred and must maintain professional competency as indicated in their delineation of privileges. All physicians must maintain current BLS certification, and ACLS certification if indicated per medical center policies.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
