This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Fayetteville VA Medical Center (VAMC), and Chief of Staff, Medicine Service. The successful candidate will serve as an Emergency Room Physician. He/she is to ensure the quality and timeliness of the services provided, customer satisfaction, as well as compliance with the standards of accrediting bodies such as the Joint Commission and the Inspector General's Combined Assessment Program. He/she is to ensure appropriate use of the available resources, and will be responsible for the state-of-the-art standards of care. He/she collaborates with other services as appropriate.

The physician is accountable to the Chief, Medicine Service, for assuring the most effective delivery of care in Emergency Medicine while meeting and exceeding compliance standards. The physician would participate in and/or manage all aspects of Emergency Medicine general program, to include clinical, administrative, academic, and research components if warranted. The physician would manage patient workload within available staffing, which may include support of physician assistants.

The physician would perform the usual administrative components of patient care management, such as: documentation of progress notes and consultation findings in an electronic medical record, dictation and electronic signature of OP reports and hospital discharge summaries, electronic entry and signature of all doctor's orders for inpatients and outpatients, etc.

Duties to be performed include but are not limited to: Perform assessments/examinations on encounters with all presenting patients; Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests necessary to complete the ED evaluation; provide attending physician oversight to residents, mid-level providers, and students; Stabilize all critically ill or injured patients; Admit patients to the hospital or discharge them from the ED with appropriate follow-up; Discuss treatment plan with patient and or family/caregiver (following COBRA guidelines); Perform medication reconciliation with all discharged patients; Participate in Quality Assurance, chart reviews, and support applicable ED performance measures; Coordinate patient care with consultants as deemed appropriate; Emergency Department physician will support the safety, occupational health and fire protection program by the application of approved standards, regulations, practices and work methods; Perform other directly related duties as assigned.

Basic Requirements

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.)

Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.

Licensure and Registration. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

First-Year Residency (Internship). Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate’s acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:

(1) Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or

(2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.

Physical Standards. Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.

English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position. If no qualified citizen applications are received, non-citizens may be considered.

After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.
