Pathways Internship Program
This Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent job in the civil service. Additional information about the Internship Program can be found at:
Serve in a supportive role to legal staff, ranging from initial case development through administrative or judicial litigation.
Assist legal staff in providing counseling services to various Region 7 divisions.
Review case materials and collaborate with case team to become familiar with questions under consideration.
Search for and summarize case law and other materials for use by attorneys in the preparation of opinions, briefs and other legal documents.
Prepare memoranda of selected decisions or opinions which incorporate legal references and analyses of precedents involved in areas of well-defined and settled points of law.

Interns qualify for an initial appointment based on their educational achievements as described below:
GS-07: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education, or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.
Only students who have completed or are pursuing a degree in law from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university will be eligible.
The duration of a Pathways appointment under Schedule D is a trial period.
If you are selected a pre-employment background check is required.
This position is designated as Low Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

Employees hired under the Pathways Program on appointments for 90 days or more are eligible to earn annual leave. Sick leave accrues from date of appointment without regard to appointment duration. Full time employees earn four hours of sick leave per pay period.
Accruals are pro-rated for part time employees.
Temporary employees are not eligible for coverage under the Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance Program. Students hired under the Internship Program are generally ineligible for retirement coverage. Employees on temporary appointments who are expected to work 130 hours per month or more for at least 90 days will be eligible to enroll in a Federal Employee Health Benefit (FEHB) plan.

Pathways Internship Program
Internship position must be related either to the student's academic field of study or the student's career interests.
Intern must sign a Participant Agreement.
Interns are appointed under Schedule D of the excepted service.
An intern NTE is not eligible for promotion.
This is a student internship appointment intended to last through the summer. This appointment may be extended and/or converted to an appointment without a NTE date depending on the program's needs and funding.
A student converted to an internship appointment without a NTE date may be eligible to be non competitively converted to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service upon successful completion of the program.
If converted to a permanent appointment in the competitive service, position may have promotion potential up to the GS-12 grade level.
