The positions are located within the Great Plains Area IHS. There MAY NOT be immediate vacancies at all locations. Positions may also be filled at other IHS locations including the Great Plains Area Office and Tribe Organizations as vacancies occur. The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients within the Great Plains Area.

Major Duties:

  • The incumbent independently operates fixed/portable radiography machine to meet the needs of the department.
  • Receives patients, explains methods of procedures, positions and sets technical factors to attain a high quality radiography.
  • Uses densitometer, and sensitometer on a daily basis if this equipment is available to assure high quality radiography.
  • Uses proper dark room techniques.
  • Develops/Maintains a quality control system for the automatic film processor on a daily basis to meet accrediting body standards.
  • Performs a variety of routine to complex examinations to meet the needs of the medical staff.
  • Requisitions supplies to meet the needs of the department; Maintains and updates the departmental Procedures Manual to meet all accrediting requirements.

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:

  • Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.
  • Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

All applicants, however, must meet the requirements below:


GS-04: Six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-03 grade level; OR, Successful completion of a full-time training course of at least 12 months' duration in a post-high school radiography program.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, OR, (2) Experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level; OR, Successful completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months' duration in a post-high school radiography program. -OR- Successful completion of a course for medical radiologic technicians in the Armed Forces is qualifying on a month-for-month basis up to the one (1) year of specialized experience required for GS-05 grade level.

GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level.

GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level.

GS-08: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level.

GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 grade level.

GS-10: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level.

NOTE: The GS-09 is for a "Supervisory Position" ONLY.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience in the operation of diagnostic radiology equipment under the direction of radiologist or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used in medical diagnosis and treatment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE DEFINED: Experience is examining and performing complex radiologic examinations and the appropriate way to photograph injuries, medical situations. Experience in coordinating the operating and the operation of ancillary equipment. Experience in the operation of basic x-ray equipment; and experience in using basic mathematical formula to calculate technical factors for non-standard position and equipment set up.

IF SUPERVISORY POSITION: Experience leader or Supervisor, a Diagnostic Radiology Department by assigning and evaluating work. Experience evaluating performance, conduct, and creative work schedules.


EDUCATION & TRAINING: Qualifying educational programs for radiography and radiation therapy technology are available in accredited colleges, universities, hospitals, medical schools, or postsecondary technical or vocational schools. Education or training from programs based in hospitals must have been from those hospitals that were accredited at the time of the education or training by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals or by the American Osteopathic Association.
