The VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Fremont, Capitola, Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, and Sonora. VAPAHCS is a teaching hospital with an affiliation with the Stanford University School of Medicine which provides a rich academic environment including medical training for physicians in virtually all specialties and subspecialties. The Nursing Assistant performs a range of patient care activities related to medical, psychiatric and specialty services within the VA Palo Alto Health Care System/Community Based Outpatient Care (CBOC), for PACT and Specialty
The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assists nursing and medical personnel in the care or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.
Monitors and records vital signs, measuring and recording height and weight, monitoring and documenting patient condition and specimen collection.
Carries out special treatments and assists with procedures including follow-up care and observation. Gives meaningful instructions and explanations to patient regarding purposes of special diagnostic tests and procedures.
Assist with basic patient televideo appointments.
Performs a variety of routine tests including but not limited to; glucose-meter sticks, respirator equipment, EKG, Bladder Scanner and related equipment.

Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.

English Language Proficiency. NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:
GS-5 Nursing Assistant:
A) Experience:One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment.
B) Education. *Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree. *[NOTE: TRANSCRIPT(S) MUST BE SUBMITTED IF EDUCATION IS BEING USED TO QUALIFY. CONFERRAL OF DEGREE(S) EARNED SHOULD BE PRESENT ON TRANSCRIPT(S). UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT(S) OK.]
C) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs).
KSA 1 - Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
KSA 2 - Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new [NAs] by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
KSA 3 - Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Current BLS provider card issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN).
Current Certified Nursing Assistant by State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.
Nursing Assistant experience in Ambulatory Care- preferred

Drug Testing:All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a drug testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with the VA. In addition, any offer of employment will be rescinded with a verified positive drug test. VA employees in drug testing designated positions are also subject to post appointment random drug testing.
Physical Requirements:This position requires walking, standing, and sitting for long periods of time. Incumbent will be climbing stairs, lifting up to 50 pounds, use dexterity of the hand and wrist and arm strength to perform dispensing of medication orders.
