Candler Farm Master Technologist I


The person employed in this job will assist with animal care and performance of testing at the Candler research site.

Major responsibilities:

  • Caring for birds (feed, water, air)

  • Working with Scientists on tests

  • Assisting with vaccinations, bleeding, and necropsies of birds

  • Cleaning/disinfection of isolation units and buildings for tests

  • Reporting of daily observations of birds

  • Reporting any equipment failure

  • Maintaining work area clean and orderly

  • Proper use of all safety procedures

  • Associated documentation and detailed recordkeeping

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications

  • Minimum of High School graduate or equivalent.

  • 3-5 years’ experience working with animals preferred.

  • Must have a clean driving record.

  • Must pass a Federal background check.

· Computer skills.

· Must be conscientious, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work alone.

· Must realize the importance of non-contamination process and be prepared to adhere strictly to the procedures.

· Ability to maintain good working relationships with others.

· Good communication skills.

· Excellent record keeping skills.

· Must not own poultry or pet birds and not reside in the same household with someone who does.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift / push / pull, 70 lbs. consistently must be able to lift and roll a weight of 70 lbs.

  • Must be able to squat, bend, and stoop, as well as twisting and turning.

  • Must stand on feet for extended periods.

  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity are important.

  • Must be able to work from a ladder.

  • Must be able to work a rotating on call schedule. Regular attendance is a must.

  • Must be able to work a rotating weekend schedule.


Experience with poultry preferred.
