Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

To provide clinical nursing care in the Operating Room with a full range of nursing proficiency. Same-day procedures are provided for local procedure, endoscopy procedure (conscious sedation) and cystoscopy procedure. Provides intensive nursing care and post anesthesia care to patients who have undergone a broad range of surgical procedures. This position reports to Supervisory Clinical Nurse. This position is located at Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Indian Health Service (IHS), Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS), Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC), Division of Nursing Services, Operating Room and Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Gallup, NM.

  • Observes and assesses patient's health status and critically ill emergency patients by physical assessment and examination.
  • Initiates treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures.
  • Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the anesthesiologist, physician and surgeon.
  • Operates and monitors specialized equipment in operating room or same day surgery.
  • Collaborates with members of the surgical and multidisciplinary teams.
  • When called in for emergency surgeries after hours, holidays or weekends, functions as a team leader and supervises movements and action of other team members. Total independence is exercised and accountability is at maximum.

  • Incumbent is required to operate a government-owned lease or private vehicle in the performance of assigned duties. A valid State Driver's License is required and must be maintained.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Registration: Applicant must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-


(Freeform) Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: For example, specialized experience in professional nursing principles, concepts and procedures as applied to the care of the peri-operative patients. Initiates treatment, medication, emergency and resuscitative measures based on appropriate utilization of physician's pre and post op orders, standing orders and post anesthesia protocol. Specialized skill to maintain, operate and monitor complex equipment used in operating room. Monitors patients having surgical procedures and under local anesthesia by assessing cardiopulmonary status, respiratory status and hemodynamic status and pain levels.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain an active, unrestricted Nursing license from any State (U.S.). If they are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

GS-09: 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's degree OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level.

GS-10: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level.
