Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The position evaluates the nursing needs of patients, develops a plan of care, initiates patient care assignments, implements and modify them as needs change; proves or directs the provision of comprehensive nursing care; delegates duties to appropriate personnel, teaching, and supervising their work as needed. The position reports to Supervisory Clinical Nurse-Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This position is located at Indian Health Service (IHS), Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS), Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC), Division of Nursing Services, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Gallup, New Mexico.

  • Maintain patient flow and efficiently in order to ensure patient safety, confidentiality and to expedite onset of treatment. Assigns, directs, and delegates staff according to their capabilities to meet patient needs. Serves as a resources person for staff floating to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
  • Provides nursing care within the Intensive Care Nursing Scope of Practice. Applies the nursing process to patients of all ages requiring stabilization and/or resuscitation for a variety of illnesses and injuries. Consults with attending physicians and other staff members to determine and evaluate the kind of health and physical care needed.
  • Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician. Participate in the development, updating, and evaluation of standards of care and quality improvement monitoring. participates and develops Quality Improvements projects for the department and participates in hospital quality improvement program.
  • Serves as team leader and formulates work schedules. Ensures patient education occurs during the shift. Ensures correct narcotic count at the end of the shift. Reviews and revises nursing care plans. Work in coordination with other lead nurses from other units. Serves as a resource person, provides guidance and leadership to staff.
  • Reviews patient's chart and ensures the staff makes legible, accurate and complete nursing entries in the patient chart for all nursing care given.
  • Provide assistance in facility emergent situation, delegating ICU staff to help as needed.
  • Participate in the preceptorship program as assigned.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United State.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

GS-11: 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level.


Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: leadership skills, professional knowledge in nursing principles, practices, concepts and procedures required to provide nursing care of intensive care unit patients, i.e., nursing diagnosis, problem oriented care plan development, use of emergency drugs, interpretation of EKG rhythms, ABGs and other laboratory data. Knowledge and skill of advanced cardiac, trauma life support of adults, pediatric and neonatal patients with specialized skill and ability in assessment, examination, administering therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician to stabilize for transport. Operates and monitors complex equipment such as mechanical ventilators, cardiac monitors, EKG mechanics, defibrillator, etc. Makes independent judgments related to assignments, coverage and Nursing interventions, teaches less experienced staff to provide competent care and organize work.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain an active, unrestricted Nursing license in any State (U.S.). If they are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

GS-11: Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or 52 weeks of specialized experience to at least the GS-09 level.
