Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

This position reports to the Supervisory Pharmacist within the Gallup Indian Medical Center, Pharmacy Department. Provides direct pharmaceutical care to patients within the Gallup Indian Medical Center service area. This position is considered as the major source of pharmaceutical clinical information and is expected to manage selected patients with chronic disease states, as well as providing pharmaceutical care for acute patients.

  • Accurately fills and dispenses of prescription and over-the-counter drugs on prescribed orders.
  • Counsels patients on the use, storage, cautions and side effects of all medications dispensed.
  • Reviews prescriptions, patient medication profile and patient record in order to dispense the prescribed pharmaceutical.
  • Compounds or oversees the compounding of drugs as prescribed.
  • Performs inpatient and outpatient pharmacy functions.

Education: Four-year bachelor's degree in pharmacy recognized by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education. Licensure: Except for research positions that do not entail patient care, all applicants must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-


For GS-11: Successful completion of a 6-year course of study leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree; 1 year of professional pharmacy experience equivalent to at least GS-9; or, for research positions, completion of all of the requirements for a master's or equivalent degree in a related scientific field.

For GS-12: One year of professional pharmacy experience equivalent to at least GS-11; or, for research positions, completion of all the requirements for a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a related scientific field.

Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish basic colors.

Other additional compensation which an individual may be eligible for are: Recruitment Incentive (Maximum of 25% of Annual Rate of Basic Pay); Appointment Above the Minimum (AAM).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-12 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
