Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

Responsible for the overall managerial duties associated with organization, implementation and evaluation of an effective and ongoing ambulatory program. It includes supervising, managing, leadership, guidance, coordinating and evaluating the provision of ambulatory nursing services. The position reports to the Supervisory Clinical Nurse (Chief Nurse Executive). This position is located at Indian Health Service (IHS), Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS), Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC), Division of Nursing Services, Nursing Administration Gallup, NM.

  • Provides direct supervision for ambulatory care Supervisory Clinical Nurses and select nurse specialist staff for planning and directing the ambulatory nursing service activities. Provides orientation as well as competency and performance evaluation.
  • Coordinates activities and communication between departments to develop policies, procedures, standards of care, and performance improvement activities; ensuring standardization throughout departments.
  • Ensures compliance with regulating agencies and third party payer requirements in relation to ambulatory nursing services and other agency accreditation standards.
  • Maintains a budget for outpatient nursing services including personnel, FTE's, equipment, supplies, travel, timekeeping and training. Initiates various personnel actions, performance awards, duty and shift assignments, reports and disciplinary actions for employees at level of authority.
  • Advises SCN's with workload data and assist with the development of staffing plans and performance improvement projects that address the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of outpatient nursing services.
  • On occasion will provide clinical supervision on a rotational basis including performance of Tour Supervisory Clinical Nurse.

Education: Degree and diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Examples of the type of specialized experience, providing guidance to nursing personnel; review and/or revise policies and procedures; manage special projects, develop staff schedule, assist with mediation of staff conflict, etc., must have understanding of marketing principles as well as knowledge of outside influences; knowledge and expertise of human resources and proper job placement are essential; formulating strategic planning which will incorporate long-term and short-term goals.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain an active, unrestricted Nursing license in any State (U.S.). If they are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
