The incumbent will be assigned to the Southeast Community Base Outpatient Clinic located in Gilbert, AZ. The Psychiatrist will provide inpatient or outpatient psychiatric and medical care in accordance with the approved privileges and all applicable state and/or Federal guidelines in support of the Psychiatry Service at the Phoenix VA Health Care System.
Routine Duties - done on a regular and repetitive basis: (1) Screen, evaluate, and admit or enroll patient to psychiatry programs. (2) Key psychiatric functions include a full spectrum of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services provided by qualified interdisciplinary staff in a safe and dignified setting with emphasis on least restrictive approach. These include but are not limited to: a) individual psychotherapy; b) crisis intervention; c) psycho-pharmacotherapy; d) consultation/liaison; e) patient education. (3) Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms, (EKGs), etc. including HIV tests and evaluate results of such tests. (4) Provide psychiatric on-call coverage. (5) Provide psychiatric Consultation-Liaison coverage, as assigned. (6) Conducting complete psychiatric evaluations (including the mental status evaluation). (7) Prescribe Buprenorphine/Prescribe Clozapine. (9) Prescribe evidenced based pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders (10) Initiate and refill prescriptions for all medications. (11) Monitor and record patient progress. (12) Obtain consent for hospitalization, tests, & medications. (13) Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities including education and shared decision-making. (14) Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and medications. (15) Write orders and notes in CPRS (Computerized Patient Record System). (16) Administer and document Suicide Risk Assessment in CPRS. (17) Perform other delegated tasks not specifically outlined herein upon the direction of supervising chiefs. (18) Provide telephone consultation with patients and family members. (19) Function as member of assigned committees, task forces, and investigative teams. (20) Teach and supervise medical students, PA students, psychiatry (and as needed, residents from other specialties) residents and fellows, and NP students. (21) Modality of care may include use telehealth equipment.
Non-routine but non-emergency duties: (1) Group psychotherapy. (2) Marital and family counseling/therapy. (3) When covering inpt section, provide medical diagnoses, assessments, laboratory workups and treatments within the scope of knowledge and privileges and in keeping with the needs of psychiatric patients. (4) When covering inpt section, provide daily medical care to patients whose medical conditions do not require the expertise of a medicine or surgical consultant. (5) When covering inpt section, initiate and expedite requests for consultations and special tests/studies throughout the daynot just "sick-call" hours. (i.e. address ongoing medical issues of inpatient/residential patients). (6) When covering inpt section, complete consults to appropriate referrals as warranted. (i.e. medicine consults). (7) When covering inpt section, transfer patients (to and from) other bed services (e.g., Medicine, Surgery) as necessary, or transfer (to and from) or discharge to other VA Medical Centers or other facilities, as appropriate. (8) When working on an inpatient unit, perform initial/periodic histories and physical examinations (including vital signs) on psychiatric inpatients. (9) When working on an inpatient unit, evaluate detoxification needs of inpatients and provide necessary medical management of the withdrawal or intoxicated state. medications. (10) When covering inpt section, screen inpatients to determine need for further health care.
Additional duties - as assigned by Section Chief or Chief of Psychiatry: (1) Perform administrative tasks. (2) Participate in clinical research projects.(needs to be credentialed in research)
LOCATION: Southeast CBOC, Gilbert, Arizona Tour of Duty: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

Citizenship. U.S. Citizenship required
Education. A Degree of Doctor of Meidcineor an equivalenet degree from approved schools. Schools of medicine holding regular institutional members in the Association of American Medical Colleges accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia.
Licensure. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Proficient in spoken and written English.
