The Greenville VA Health Care Clinic (HCC), which is located at 401 Moye Boulevard, Greenville, NC 27834, opened in January 2014. It operates as a satellite facility of the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
The Greenville VA HCC houses primary care, specialty care, mental health, prosthetics, women's health, audiology, optometry, dental, pharmacy, radiology, laboratory services, and physical/occupational-therapy services. The Greenville HCC added procedures such as endoscopy in 2015 and Infusion Clinic in 2016. The Greenville HCC serves 10,058 patients and has a rapidly growing patient base. The Greenville HCC enjoys a growing partnership with East Carolina University (ECU).
Greenville is home to 27,000 students who attend ECU, which offers a wide range of cultural and sporting events, including musical concerts, theatrical and dance productions, travel films and lectures. The Greenville Museum of Art displays local art, as well as rotating exhibitions. Theater performances are also beginning to emerge in Greenville. Local groups such as the Greenville Theater Project and the Magnolia Arts Center offer outlets for both performers and audiences alike. Many restaurants offer live entertainment on weekends. Uptown Greenville is a non-profit revitalization project that promotes numerous events in the downtown district. One of the most anticipated annual events in the downtown area of Greenville is the large annual Halloween street party.
Greenville is located 80 miles from the Crystal Coast Beaches, including Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, historic Beaufort and Morehead City. We are also within commuting distance of the waterfront towns of Washington and New Bern. Greenville is also located 80 miles east of the capital city, Raleigh.

Functional Statement Title/#: Supervisory Dental Assistant, GS-0681-08
Work Schedule:Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.In order to meet the mission needs, you may be required to work an alternate work schedule. Alternate work schedules may include, but are not limited to, evenings, weekends and holidays.
This position is located at the Greenville Health care Center, in the Dental service. The supervisory Dental Assistant is responsible for the supervision, administrative management and direction of dental assistants. The incumbent may be delegated full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the dental assisting activities for the service or equivalent unit at an independent outpatient clinic. They have full supervisory responsibility over a section or equivalent work unit which would require three or more dental assistants; typical duties include making work assignments, monitoring of staff dental assistant clinical performance, conducting performance appraisals, and other clinical and administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Service Chief to ensure that the mission of the service and the medical center has been satisfied.
The incumbent may be delegated full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the dental assisting activities for the service or equivalent unit which would require three or more dental assistants.
The incumbent assists the dental service in clinic operations related to policy and performance standards development, equipment requests and workload analysis.
The incumbent will analyze clinically appropriate data to effectively optimize quality, performance, and productivity within the section.
Coordinates clinical workflow and makes work assignments, hears and resolves employee complaints and workplace issues, and maintain efficient flow of patient care develops and provides training to staff dental assistants, students and/or trainees.
The supervisory Dental Assist functions such as assessing competency, providing performance appraisals and managing training. The incumbent approves periods of leave; recommend special advancements and promotion, disciplinary actions, etc. Individuals may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis.
The supervisory Dental Assistant establishes and maintain effective and cooperative work relationships within the dental service and the facility.
Tasks are completed and good working relationships among team members and with management are maintained, and that team priorities and goals, needs, and achievements are coordinated with management.
The Dental assistants at this level serve in staff dental assistant positions independently performing more complex work in assigned specialties in supervisory dental assistant positions.
Incumbent must maintain current Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certification; dental assistants receives and prepares patients for dental treatment and assists the dentist at chairside, bedside or in the operating room.

a. U.S. citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
b. Physical Requirements: must be medically cleared by the VHA Employee Health Unit (EHU) physician prior to entry on duty. As per VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
c. English Language Proficiency: Dental hygienists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
d. Experience and Education:
(1) Experience: six months experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work, or provides familiarity with the work. OR
(2) Education: successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
(3) Experience/Education Combination: equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.
e. Certification: public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.
(1) Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence: successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.;
OR successful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry;
ORsuccessful completion of a radiation health and safety program or examination approved by a state board of dentistry or the Department of Defense (DOD).
(2) Non-Certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for certification fo radiologic competence may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate dental assistant under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 (a) (1) (D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This will result in removal from the GS-681 series and may result in termination of employment.
(3) Certification in basic life support methods is highly desirable.
(4) Certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes DANB as the national certification for Dental Assistants. DANB certification is not required, but highly desirable for the appointment of Dental Assistants up to and including the full performance level.
Grade Determination: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met:
GS-8 Supervisory Dental Assistant:
Experience, at least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
a. Advanced knowledge of dental assisting across multiple areas of practice, and the demonstrated ability to provide guidance to staff dental assistants.
b. Skill in coordinating clinical work flow and assignments.
c. Ability to assist the Chief in Dental Clinic operations related to policy development, equipment requests and workload analysis.
d. Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative work relationships.
e. Ability to analyze clinically appropriate data effectively to optimize quality, performance, and productivity within section.
f. *Ability to perform supervisory functions such as assessing competency, providing performance appraisals and managing training.
Advanced knowledge of dental assisting across multiple areas of practice and five years of experience.
