Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities: • Lead the R&D laboratory services function serving Bayer Radiology medical devices including execution of medical device product testing in support of advanced development, new product development, life-cycle- engineering and product supply. • Lead annual objective setting and resource planning for the lab services function to ensure essential business priorities are achieved; manage budgets, hiring, coaching, mentoring, development and performance management of laboratory services team members. • Meet fluctuating laboratory resource demands by leveraging skilled contractors and contingent labor as needed. Develop and manage 3rd party partnerships (testing facilities) that support our medical device testing. • Perform weekly planning, prioritization and assignment of lab service staff comprised of electro-mechanical technicians and machinists responsible for component fabrication, prototype assembly, equipment trouble-shooting and test execution (including design element and verification and validation) across informatics, software, electro-mechanical and sterile disposable projects. • Manage all laboratory equipment, machinery and tools, ensuring comprehensive asset maintenance, repairs, calibrations, upgrades, replacements and retirements as needed. • Manage capital assets / equipment in the various R&D laboratories including environmental chambers, tensile / compressive load test equipment (i.e. Instrons), shock and vibration tables, RF chamber, CNC & manual machining centers, lathes, 3-D printing equipment, LabVIEW and robotic testers. • Identify and implement capital improvements within the R&D laboratories needed to support future device development capabilities, lab capacity, productivity and efficiency improvements. • Maintain an audit ready laboratory environment at all times to satisfy applicable regulations, process compliance, safety metrics and various test standards including external lab certifications.

More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following: • MS in Mechanical, Electrical or similar engineering discipline; candidates with a BS degree and extensive technical / functional leadership experience in the medical device field may be considered in lieu of advanced educational requirement • 12+ years of progressive technical resource management and development experience, exercising broad technical, project management and organizational skills to maximize functional capability and performance, required. • Competence in select, critical product technologies with a systems level perspective, required. • Anticipate foreseeable technical situations, analyzing, identifying problems, and directing technical resources, required. • Building technical organizations to align with portfolio plans and business strategies, required. • Excellent trouble-shooting, problem solving, analytical skills and sound judgment. • Ensuring appropriate integration and compliance with product development processes, required. • Strong organizational communication, networking, leadership and management skills to direct diverse, multidisciplinary functions, • Progressive experience preparing and managing expense and capital budgets. • Strategic and tactical planning skills related to technical staff management, to meeting changing business needs and priorities. • Development and implementation of capital improvements initiatives having a direct impact on efficiency, upgrades, and replacement of assets. • Candidates with laboratory management and /or experience managing a medium-sized team in medical device R&D or manufacturing environments, strongly preferred.
