The Dental Officer positions are located at one of the Indian hospitals, clinics, or health centers in the Oklahoma City Area. The purpose of this position is to provide basic and advanced dental health services to the designated population in accordance with Indian Health Service Policies. This Open Continuous Announcement (OCA) allows acceptance of applications throughout the year with eligible applicants being placed on the OCA register and referred for consideration when vacancies occur. - Independently examines, diagnoses, and treats commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems.
- Diagnoses malocclusions, and pathological or irregular conditions and ensures proper referral of patients for evaluation or specialty care.
- Provides all appropriate dental disease prevention measures for each patient treated.
- Communicates effectively with patients and families with multiple dental and health problems and of different backgrounds.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Applicants who meet the basic requirements qualify for GS-11.
Education: Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school. Must submit a copy of your transcript. Application will be considered incomplete without proof.
Licensure: Applicants must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Must submit copy of your Dentistry license that includes expiration date. Application will be considered incomplete without proof. New graduates must submit verification of licensure prior to encumbering a position with IHS.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below to qualify for the GS-12 level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: For GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least two years of professional dentistry experience and/or training; OR superior academic ability defined as that demonstrated by an intern, who on the basis of an evaluation of all interns who have completed training in the same hospital or in the same kind of internship program over the past 5 years, would fall into the upper half of the group.
Experience and/or Training must be one of the following types:
- Post-licensure professional experience in the general practice of dentistry
- Approved internship training
- Approved residency training
- Graduate-level study in an accredited dental school
- Post-licensure professional experience in a specialized area of practice
- Other advanced study of training (outside a dental school or hospital) creditable towards satisfaction of training program requirements for Board eligibility.
For purposes of this standard, the following terms are defined.
Approved internship; approved residency - Training in a hospital dental internship or residency approved by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.
Graduate-level study - Either dental graduate study leading to an advanced degree such as Master of Science, or postgraduate (nondegree) dental school study involving a level of instruction comparable to that provided in a graduated degree program.
National certifying board - An examining board in a special area of dental practice recognized by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.
Board eligibility - Qualification for examination by a national certifying board as a result of having met the advanced training program requirements for a dental specialty.
The selected individual(s) is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Promotion Potential: This position may have promotion potential to the GS-12 grade level.
