Assignments: Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

The Pharmacy Technician of this position works within the inpatient and/or outpatient Pharmacy and performs the full range of pharmacy technician functions in support of Pharmacy Service operations. The technician will perform duties include:

Operates and maintains automated dispensing units used for dispensing medications including controlled substance and ward stock medications.

Performs final review of medication to be dispensed to inpatient wards and/or fills unit dose carts independently with secondary review.

Receives and verifies drug deliveries; determines most appropriate storage area and ensures storage conforms to hospital and OSHA standards.

Conducts ward/clinic inspections for the proper storage of medications and documents filling on inspection report form.

Processes outdated unusable inventory for return to pharmaceutical manufacturers or prime vendor for either replacement or credit.

Assists in effecting drug recalls by checking applicable lots and informing appropriate personnel.

Performs substantially all sterile technical operations in the sterile solutions unit of the pharmacy, which serves all area of the hospital.

Receives reviews, interprets and prioritizes doctor's order for IV medications, and informs the clinical pharmacist of any questionable order.

Strictly adheres to aseptic technique procedures and performs normal preventive maintenance for the special IV equipment such as the laminar air flow hood and etc.

Prepares sterile pharmaceuticals which are associated with a high degree of toxicity, and follows the strict aseptic procedures.

Utilizes knowledge of Federal and hospital and Pharmacy service regulations/policies concerning pharmaceutical practices in performing day to day functions.

Responds inquiries from professional staff and other health care, patients and outside parties, and refers professional-technician questions received to clinical pharmacists.

Work Schedule:The INPATIENT pharmacy provides service 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week. The employee in this position will work five (5) days a week and may work evenings, nights, weekend, holidays, etc. for staffing coverage, and the shift is 3:30 pm to mid-night. Employees who work in the weekends and holidays, are entitled to receive weekend premium and holiday pay when worked.

Work Schedule: The OUTPATIENTThe employees in this position will work five (5) days a week and require to rotate for staffing coverage. Employees occasionally rotate Saturdays and holidays, and who work in the weekends and holidays, are entitled to receive weekend premium and holiday pay when worked.

Monday through Friday(rotating 8 hour shifts of 8:00am-4:30pm, 9:00am-5:30pm, 10:30am-7:00pm)

Education or Experience:A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above (COPY OF CERTIFICATION REQUIRED).

Physical Requirements:Must pass pre-employment physical; see VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

English Language Proficiency:The Applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.

GS-6 Pharmacy Technician:

Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in Federal Service, that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. The specialized experience include: processing medication orders, controlled substance processing, inventory management and pharmacy information system, sterile product compounding and unit dose processing. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs.

Preferred Experience:

  • Having experience working in an inpatient and/or outpatient pharmacy setting.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.

Certification: The National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 level and above.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

  2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

  3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

  4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

  5. Knowledge of the policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such emergency carts.

  6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
